WWhatever happens in the last two games of the regular competition, ProBuild Lions will stay in first seed.

Tonight the Lions secured the first play-off spot through a 67-61 win over AutoCAD Amazone. The main goal for the regular competition, home-advantage until the last round, is reached.

Tanya Bröring impressively led the Lions with 31 points and Amy Taylor contributed 16.

Former Lion Sharon Bos scored 22 points for AutoCAD Amazone.

Anouk Biesters did not play due to a foot-injury. Jasmijn Overbeeke had to leave the game with a sprained ankle in the third period. It is not yet clear how seriously she is injured.

ProBuild never trailed, except for one short moment in the second period.

Coach Laki Lakner said he was happy with the first play-off spot being secured, but was not satisfied with the way his team played tonight. "We won, but that does not mean we were good," he said. "Except for Tanya, we did not reach our normal level, making too many mistakes on the defensive end and not being aggressive enough in offense. We had some good moments, though, and we will build on that in the coming weeks to be as sharp as we can be in the play-offs."

ProBuild jumped to a 14-4 lead behind six points from Tanya Bröring and a score and a 3-pointer by Amy Taylor, but José Verhulsdonck and Sharon Bos both hit 3-pointers for AutoCAD to close the gap to 14-12. Amy Taylor hit a second trey and Tanya Bröring made two free throws to put the Lions ahead 20-14 at the end of the period.

In the second quarter Judy Wright buried a 3-pointer to cut AutoCAD's deficit to 20-19, but Amy Taylor hit a pair of free throws to make it 22-19. Laki Lakner took a time-out, but next Sharon Bos made two free throws and grabbed an offensive rebound to make it 22-23.

ProBuild's first and only deficit of the game served as a wake-up call. Jasmijn Overbeeke drained a 3-pointer and Tanya Bröring hit two treys to spark a 12-0 run, putting the Lions up 35-23 in the 8th minute.

Just before the break Amazone cut the deficit to 37-29 but Amy Taylor beat the buzzer by drilling an off-balanced 3-pointer in heavy traffic, 40-29.

In the third quarter the Lions could not get away. Judy Wright made it 45-38 and hit two free throws to cut Amazone's deficit to 47-42 in the 7th minute. José Verhulsdock netted the quarters last basket, scoring 51-45 .

In the second minute of the last period Verhulsdonck hit a short jumper to pull Amazone within 53-49, but Theresa LeCuyer had a lay-up and Tanya Bröring scored six points to rebuild the Lions' lead to 63-51 with five minutes to go. Amazone managed to cut the deficit to 67-61 behind three baskets by Sharon Bos, but was unable to hold the Lions from winning the game and the regular competition.

Saturday AutoCAD Amazone

Saturday the ProBuild Lions host AutoCAD Amazone from Utrecht. Two weeks ago Yellow Bike visited Utrecht and clinched the second play-off spot through a lopsided 48-77 victory, leaving AutoCAD stucked in the third seed. It is likely that the Amazones will hold their position, and face Perik Jumpers in the first round of the play-offs.

ProBuild Lions is looking to revenge it's stunning 67-59 loss in Utrecht. Moreover, the Lions need just one more victory to clinch the first play-off spot. If this goal can be reached on Saturday, ProBuild will be able to cruise to the end of the regular competition as the first seeded team, regardless the results against Renes Binnenland and Yellow Bike in the last two games. Lely Amsterdam then will be the most likely first opponent in the play-offs.

Saturday's game starts at 8.30 PM CET.

ProBuild's second unit hosted Akrides IJmuiden on Friday night. Karina Worku scored 18 points to lead the young Lions to a 62-60 victory. At the break the game was tied 29-29. In the third period the Lions trailed 31-37, but a 3-pointer by Theresa LeCuyer and scores from Lotte Nijenhuis and Annicke van der Burg took them to a 37-41 lead. ProBuild never trailed again and cruised to a 61-52 lead in the 9th minute of the last quarter, but finally had a narrow escape when Nieke van der Zee scored 8 points in the last minute for Akrides to close the gap to 60-62.

Amy Taylor scored 21 points, grabbed 8 rebounds and led the Lions to a lopsided 49-73 road-win in Nijmegen. Theresa LeCuyer added 14 points and Jasmijn Overbeeke chipped in with 11 points, 7 rebounds and 4 blocked shots.

The Matrixx Magixx was able to hang on for two periods, but had to let go in the third, when the Lions tightened their defense and allowed the Magixx just 7 points.

Coach Laki Lakner, who received a technical during the break for criticizing the referees, said he thought his team played a good second half defensively. "We fought hard during the whole game, but in the first half at times we lacked concentration, making mistakes on the defensive end. In the second half we began to use our heads and played a little smarter. Obviously that worked out, as we allowed them just 18 points after the break."

Lakners point was illustrated nicely by Matrixx Magixx' Okeisha Howard, who scored 15 of her 17 points in the first half.

Gerda Heinen hit two 3-pointers in the first period, when the Lions built a 0-12 early lead, but in the second quarter the Magixx bounced back and got as close as 18-20. Theresa LeCuyer hit a 3-pointer to make it 18-23. At halftime the Lions led 30-35.

The first six minutes of the third period the Magixx stayed scoreless for the first six minutes. The Lions were just a little more productive, thanks to Amy Taylor's score in the third minute. But in the second part of the period ProBuild pulled away, fueled by two consecutive scores from Belinda Bos, 37-49.

In the fourth period the Lions put away the game. Amy Taylor set up Theresa LeCuyer for a lay-up, 37-55 and Tanya Bröring scored four straight points to make it 40-59.

In the last minutes of the game the Magixx were held scoreless, as the Lions cruised to a 48-73 victory.

Elite A Starts for ProBuild

Saturday ProBuild Lions travel to the city of Nijmegen near the German border to battle the 5th seeded Matrixx Magixx. The trip to Nijmegen brings up some bad memories for the Lions, as their last visit on November 4th ended in a 61-60 loss. However, in their home game in Landsmeer they took revenge, rolling to a lopsided 85-52 victory.

Anouk Biesters, who saw her scoring output increasing from 10.7 ppg last year to 12.3 ppg this season, will not be in the line-up against her former team due to a foot-injury. Ilana Vergunst is still on the injured-list suffering from a torn ankle-ligament. Amy Taylor had to be taken to the hospital Monday with a wound under her eyebrow after running into Tanya Bröring's elbow, but she will be able to play. Theresa LeCuyer was ill at the beginning of the week, but resumed practicing on Wednesday.

The game starts at 7.30 PM CET.

ProBuild 2 boekt knappe uitzege in Enschede
Auteur: Robin van de Bilt
Datum: 11 maart 2007

Scores: Nijenhuis 24, vd Burg 12 (archief-foto), Corbijn 10, Worku 7, Hessling 6, Bernts 6, Post 4 punten.
Komend weekend weer een thuiswedstrijd, op de vrijdag om 21.00 uur tegen VBC Akrides.

Tanya Bröring scored 22 points and dished out 7 assists to lead the Lions to a 83-71 victory on Celeritudo Groningen. Anouk Biesters added 14 points and Amy Taylor 12. Taylor scored all of her points in the first half.

The game was ugly and physical, but the Lions never trailed after the first minute.

Coach Laki Lakner criticized both his colleague from Groningen and the referees. "They are the number two team in points allowed per game. And instead of teaching his team how to play proper defense, their coach is yelling on the sideline, encouraging his team to shove and hack as much as they can. And the referees allowed it. That was kind of frustrating. "

Coach Lakner said he thought his own team´s game was a little better than last week. "I see some signs we are on our way back. We did not play a great game, but at least I saw some fighting spirit and at some points we ran the offense well. We were a little bit unlucky shooting the trey, we shot 4-out-of-16. But on the whole we shot a very decent 50% from the floor."

Theresa LeCuyer scored 8 points and pulled down 7 rebounds in 20 minutes of playing time.

After Naomi Thalens scored 4-5 for Groningen, Amy Taylor buried a 3-pointer to spark a 0-9 run, 4-14. But by the end of the period Celeritudo had cut the deficit to 17-20.

Amy Taylor and Tanya Bröring took the Lions to a 21-28 lead in the 4th minute of the second period. Anouk Biesters put the LIons up 31-41 in the 7th minute.

At the break the Lions were up 36-45.

In the 5th minute of the third quarter Tanya Bröring hit a trey to take the Lions to their biggest lead of the game, 44-60. But eight consecutive points by Pam Brown cut the deficit to 57-69 at the beginning of the 4th period.

Two points by Els Kijlstra and a 3-point play by Brown closed the gap to 62-69 in the 3rd minute of the last period. But next Jasmijn Overbeeke, who was in foul trouble and had sat out most of the game on the bench, scored 7 straight points to secure the win for the Lions, 62-76.

Pam Brown was fouled out in the 5th minute, having scored 17 points for Groningen.

Saturday the ProBuild Lions travel to the northern city of Groningen, as always the longest trip of the season. There they will meet Celeritudo, which secured the 7th seed last week through a 72-74 victory at Lely Amsterdam. In theory the 6th seed is within reach for Groningen, if Perik Jumpers is willing to cooperate. Last week the team from Tubbergen did not, as they unexpectedly beat AutoCAD Amazone - and repeated a few days later by beating Amazone to advance to the Finals of the Dutch Cup Competition. The first game between ProBuild and Celeritudo ended in a lopsided 93-58 Landsmeer victory.

For the Lions it is time to end their winter slump and return to their usual level of sharpness. Except for Ilana Vergunst's ankle injury there are no health problems anymore to stand in the way.

Game starts at 7 PM CET.

Amy Taylor scored 21 points and led the ProBuild Lions to a 71-51 victory against Grasshoppers. Jasmijn Overbeeke fell 1 rebound and 1 steal shy of a triple-double, with 12 points, 9 rebounds, 9 steals and 5 blocked shots.

Theresa LeCuyer made a decent debut with 2 points and 6 rebounds in 13 minutes of playing time. "It felt good to be on the court again", she said. "But obviously I am not in game-condition yet. I am going to build it up gradually next weeks and I plan to peak in the play-offs."

Coach Laki Lakner said he saw enough to recognize LeCuyer's potential. "She's an intelligent player, who reads the game well and finds her teammates easily. Next weeks we have to work on her condition, as well as all the little subtle things we do in defense, but I am confident she'll pick that up easily. I think she will make a great offensive couple with Jasmijn Overbeeke."

Lakner was not satisfied with the game, however. "As the last couple of weeks was the case, we struggled. We don't play our best game at the moment. But I know it will come back as soon as we play our competitors for the title, so I don't worry too much."

The Lions build an early 9-4 lead, but a 0-10 Grasshoppers run made it 9-14. Amy Taylor hit a jumper, 12-14, but the Lions could not prevent losing the period 11-16.

In the second period Grasshoppers widened the gap to 13-21, their biggest lead in the game. After Grasshoppers' Talia Versteeg made it 22-27, Tany Bröring made a lay-up and Amy Taylor hit a 3-pointer to even the score, 27-27.

At the break the Lions were up 35-28.

Grasshoppers managed to claw back to 38-36 in the 3rd minute of the 3rd period, but next Amy Taylor scored 10 points to spark a 16-0 Lions run which brought them up 54-36.

At the beginning of the last quarter, ProBuild allowed Grasshoppers one more time to cut the deficit to less than 10 points, when Karin Kuijt hit a trey to make it 56-47. But the Lions' next burst, with 3-pointers from Amy Taylor, Lotte Nijenhuis and Nadine Boesaart put them up by 20 points again and secured the win.

Next week the Lions travel to Groningen to meet Celeritudo for the last game of the second half of the competition. Om March 10 the regular competition enters its third stage: the five top seeded teams will meet each other one more time before the play-offs starts (the "Elite-A"). The same goes for the five last-seeded teams, who will fight for three of the eight play-off spots (the "Elite-B"). For ProBuild's schedule, see the schedule.

ProBuild Lions Hosts Grasshoppers

Saturday the ProBuild Lions hosts Grasshoppers from Katwijk, the home town of Tanya Bröring, who played for Grasshoppers in her junior days. At the moment Grasshoppers battles for the 8th seed and a play-off spot with Lely Amsterdam, so there's a chance Grasshoppers and ProBuild will meet each other in the first round of the play-offs. Last week the team from Katwijk suffered a disappointing 68-76 loss to Celteritudo Groningen, who more or less secured the 7th spot with their victory.

This morning Theresa LeCuyer arrived on Schiphol Airport and tonight coach Laki Lakner welcomed her at practice. LeCuyer expects to get in game shape in a few weeks time. "I started to play basketball in January again, after my injury was healed", she said. "Not on a professional level, but it brought me in decent shape again. I plan to spend a lot of time in the fitness room next weeks. Within a few weeks I will be in game shape. The only thing that has become rusty, is my Dutch."

Two years ago, in Leiden, LeCuyer took Dutch classes and speaks it a little. "I know it, when you talk about me, so don't say anything bad", she laughed.

Saturday Theresa LeCuyer will make her debut in Landsmeer. "I don't expect anything of her then", coach Laki Lakner said. "She just has to spend some minutes on the floor, to comply with regulations. We are going to take it slow with her." Lakner believes LeCuyer can be of great value for his team. "She fits in well with our style of play", he said. "I'm sure it won't take her long to blend in and contribute."

ProBuild Lions Return to Original Plan
Author: Henk Wals
Date: February 18, 2007

Dutch

In the summer of 2006 ProBuild Lions proudly announced the signing of Theresa LeCuyer, the leading scorer in the Dutch league in 2004-2005 and NCAA II player of the year in the US in 2001.

But just before taking off for Amsterdam Theresa LeCuyer participated in a pick-up game with a college team in Minnesota and partially tore her Achilles tendon. She was to be sidelined for at least two months and the ProBuild Lions management had to decide to look for another American front court player.

A week later the signing of Amy Rose Parrish, a former Fresno State Universiy star and a more than adequate replacement, was announced.

However, Amy Parrish also was not exactly lucky as it came to injuries. After being sidelined during December with a torn abdominal muscle, in January she had a traffic accident and sprained her ankle. Just as soon she had recovered from that, she suffered a knee injury in a game with ProBuild's second unit. Last week a MRI-scan and a CT-scan were made and the injury was diagnosed season-ending. This week Parrish will undergo exploratory surgery.

Looking for a replacement player for the second time, the idea came up to contact LeCuyer to see if she was healthy again and still interested to play in Holland. It turned out that Theresa LeCuyer was more than interested and it took her and ProBuild little time to come to an agreement.

LeCuyer is expected to arrive on Schiphol Airport on Thursday.

The 6-1 American was the leading scorer in the Dutch league in the 2004-2005 season, when she played for Leiderdorp and averaged 23.7 points and 11.8 rebounds per game.

Before coming to Europe LeCuyer played for the University of Minnesota in the Big Ten Conference of the NCAA I for two seasons, before she transferred to the University of North Dakota in the NCAA II. With Minnesota, as a sophomore she was the second scorer on the team, with more than 8 points per game. After moving to North Dakota, in 2001 she was named the North Central Conference women's basketball most valuable player and NCAA II player of the year. With the Fighting Sioux she averaged 17.2 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.

AAmy Taylor had 10 points in the first half, but was held scoreless in the second, as the Lions suffered their second defeat of the season. On their home court in Utrecht AutoCAD Amazone came out victorious 67-59.

Tanya Bröring scored 20 points, Anouk Biesters had 11 points and 8 rebounds.

Coach Laki Lakner gave his opponent all the credits. "They played with passion and energy we could not match tonight. They obviously were highly motivated to win this game, while we were like 'oh well, just another boring game against a mediocre team before the play-offs starts…' I look upon it as a wake-up call. We're not that good. We have to keep on working very, very hard to reach our goals. That's what I told the girls after the game."

After five minutes the game was still tied, 11-11, but a 5-0 run brought Amazone in the lead, 16-11. Amy Taylor hit her only 3-pointer in the game to make it 16-14, but at the end of the period the Lions still looked at a 20-16 deficit.

At the beginning of the second period Amazone widened the gap to 25-16, but after that ProBuild went in a zone defense which caused AutoCAD some trouble. The Lions also struggled offensively, but slowly managed to cut the deficit to 29-27 at the break.

Jasmijn Overbeeke scored six points to put the Lions up 29-35 in the 3rd minute of the 3rd period, their biggest lead in the game. Amazone stayed close and at the end of the quarter Marloes Renskers tied the game with a 3-pointer, 45-45.

Another trey by Renskers put Amazone up 57-52 in the 6th minute of the last period. That one proved to be crucial. ProBuild had no trouble scoring after that, but was not able to stop AutoCAD either, so the deficit stayed more or less the same.

In the last minute the Lions were forced to commit fouls to stop the clock, but Judy Wright and Bianca Ziemann did not falter on the free throw line.

Saturday ProBuild Lions travel to the city of Utrecht to battle AutoCAD Amazone, the team of coach Dwight van West, Laki Lakner's former assistant. AutoCAD was in first seed for a while in the first half of the competition, but dropped to the fourth seed after losses to Binnenland and Matrixx Magixx. After the los in Nijmegen to the Magixx, Amazone narrowly escaped in Groningen (Celeritudo, 80-81) and Delft (DAS, 60-62).

Meanwhile, the Lions received some bad news this week, after an MRI of Amy Parrish' knee showed the injury appears to be serious and probably season-ending. Next week Parrish will undergo exploratory surgery.

Amy Taylor scored 26 points as the Lions had no trouble beating last seeded DAS Delft, 82-62. Taylor shot 64% from the floor and was 7-out-of-5 from the 3-point line.

She did, however, get little help from her teammates, who stayed all stuck in single digits in a game which coach Laki Lakner afterwards thought was "ugly and uninspired".

"The only good things about it were Amy's shooting and the re-debut of Belinda Bos", Lakner said. "In my pre-game talk I emphasized the importance of being able to be sharp at will in a game like this. In the play-offs we are going to a two-games-a-week schedule and the key to success is to stay focused in every single game then."

"But apparently we are not able to do that yet," Lakner continued. "Well, we still have some time to work on that before the month of May comes."

Belinda Bos scored 7 points in just 15 minutes of playing time after having not played since April 2006 due to a knee-injury.

"I thought it went reasonably well", she said. "Although it is obvious that I am not in game shape yet. But I do not worry about that. It will come."

Coach Laki Lakner said he was happy to have Bos back in his line-up. "When her game-shape returns, I think she will become important to us towards the end of the season", he said. "She's a big guard, a good ball handler with long arms, who can also play tough defense. She's versatile and can play at multiple positions."

Gerda Heinen did not play due to illness and Amy Parrish because of a knee-injury. Parrish is scheduled for an MRI next Monday.

Jasmijn Overbeeke had 12 rebounds.

After the first period the Lions led 23-10 and at half time the gap was widened to 46-30.

In the second half ProBuild cruised to an easy victory.

Coach Laki Lakner gave all of his players time on the floor.

ProBuild started well against Renes Binnenland, the number three on the chart. ProBuild won quarter one by seven, although the concentration at the end dropped a bit (13-20). In the first few minutes of the next quarter ProBuild seemed to recuperate, but that was only during a short period. Renes took maximum advantage and with an impressive 14-0 run ended op top (35-29) . After the break ProBuild got their act together and bit by bit narrowed the gap. The third quarter was a level game, and ended ProBuild trailing by four (50-46). In the final quarter Renes got in foul-trouble and ProBuild finished the game professionally (60-74).
Three players finished in double digits: Amy Taylor 20, Tanya Bröring 19 and Anouk Biesters 13. Jasmijn Overbeeke just fell short with 9 points and 9 rebounds. Due to injuries Amy Parrish and Belinda Bos observed the game from the bench.

Amy Taylor started off with her traditional 3 pointer. Only a small crowd in "de Driespong" saw the immediate answer by a score and bonus of Anneloes Kodde. Renes equalizes. ProBuild spears off with scores of Amy Taylor and Jasmijn Overbeeke. Only Anna Vizencetto can provide a limited answer (7-20). The following press surprises ProBuild and with a 6-0 run, constructed by Laura Kooij, Carola de Jong and Anna Vizencetto. The first quarter ends with a 13-20 score.

Renes keeps up the pressure but can not avoid that ProBuild increases the distance up to 10 points (15-25). At a score of 17-27 it seems a done deal, but Renes strikes back with a 14-0 run. ProBuild completely lost their touch and Renes takes a rest with a comfortable 6 point lead. Half-time score (35-29).

In the third quarter Anna Vizencetto and Carola de Jong even increase the difference up to 10 points (39-29). Anna Vizencetto plays a important role in the scores on Barendrecht' site. However when the ProBuild "Airforce" led by Jamine Overbeeke and Tanya Bröring arrives the lead in smelting away. After three quarters the difference is reduced to 4 points (50-26).

Renes starts in a zone and pulls down the first scores in the final quarter. After a well placed time-out of Laki Lakner the ProBuild defense is put in place again. After three minutes ProBuild (52-53) topples the score and disappears into the distance. GertJan van der Linden tries to turn the tide two time-outs in a row, but does not succeed. Anouk Biesters, Amy Taylor and last but not least Tanya Bröring put the final score (60-74) on the boards.
