Tanya Bröring and the ProBuild Lions sent another strong message to first seeded Yellow Bike Den Helder. The Lions pushed Yellow Bike around in a 71-59 victory that marked Yellow Bike's first loss in the regular competition. Bröring scored 19 points, Amanda Davidson added 14 and Belinda Bos chipped in with 11. Dena Williams was sidelined in the first period with a knee injury. Trainer Rene Wormhoudt diagnosed a torn ligament on the inner side of the knee and said Williams will probably be out for 5-6 weeks. "I don't know, I slipped, or something," Williams said after the game. "I can walk, but it hurts and my knee is still swelling. Bad luck, I guess." Williams is scheduled for a MRI Monday or Tuesday. The Lions jumped quickly on Den Helder and raced to a 17-8 lead at the end of the period. In the second period Susan Peters hit a 3-pointer to ignite a 11-0 Lions burst, 32-14. A technical foul by coach Laki Lakner and one by Nadine Boesaart - her fifth - gave Yellow Bike the opportunity to get back in the game, scoring 10 successive points to narrow the gap to 32-24. But Tanya Bröring, Gerda Heinen and Sharon Bos all scored to give the Lions a comfortable 12-point cushion at halftime, 38-26. Without Dena Williams and Nadine Boesaart and with Sharon Bos in foul-trouble, the Lions started the third quarter with a shortage of post-players, but compensated for that by a full-court press, limiting Yellow Bike's opportunities to get into the paint and capitalize on their height-advantage. The gap stayed around 12 points during the whole second half. Amanda Davidson and Tanya Bröring combined for 14 of ProBuilds' 17 points in the last period to seal the victory. Coach Laki Lakner said he was proud of the way his team played defense. "Since the first half championship tournament, we struggled a little on defense, but last weeks we showed signs of improvement and tonight we were back on the level we showed at the beginning of January. We did not make many mistakes. I mean: Den Helder averages 86 points this season and tonight they had 59." | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Five Lions posted double figures as ProBuild never trailed and cruised to a 61-79 victory on AutoCAD Amazone. Belinda Bos, Amanda Davidson and Gerda Heinen all three had 14 points, Dena Williams added 12 and Sharon Bos 10. Coach Laki Lakner saw that his team squandered a 16 point lead in the second period. Lakner did not liked this at all and left no misunderstanding about it in the locker room at halftime. "I want everybody on this team take pride in playing good defense", he said. "And some players lacked the intensity in the second quarter. I found that disappointing, because I want us to be the best defensive team in the league, like we were in the first half of the season." On the other hand Lakner said he was proud of how his team played in the second half. Sharon Bos, Dena Williams and Gerda Heinen all three scored 6 points in the first quarter as the Lions raced to a 17-25 lead, but they undid a solid first quarter with an awful second period, first widening the gap to 17-33, but next allowing Amazone to almost tie the game at halftime, 39-40. Amazone stayed close until the 6th minute of the third period, 48-49, before 3-pointers by Susan Peters and Belinda Bos triggered a 2-11 surge to make it 50-60 by the end of the quarter. A trey by Amanda Davidson and two more baskets by Belinda Bos gave the Lions a comfortable 53-68 lead three minutes into the 4th period. ![]() |

Dena Williams scored 21 points, pulled down 9 rebounds and had a crucial steal to help the Lions to advance to the semi-finals of the Dutch Cup Competition. Amanda Davidson added 15 points and Sharon Bos 12 as the Lions outlasted Lely 58-69 in the Amsterdam Apollohal. Coach Laki Lakner was not quite satisfied, however. "We won, just because they played even worse than we did", he said. "Our defensive rotation was not right, and on offense we struggled most of the game. We have to get our form back soon, because we have some tough games scheduled the coming weeks." After the first period the game was tied 18-18, but at halftime the Lions led 27-37. With 5 minutes on the clock in the third quarter ProBuild led as many as 14 points, but then stayed scoreless for 5 minutes, allowing Lely to cut the deficit to 38-45 by the end of the quarter. In the 4th period Lely closed in to 3 points in the 7th minute, 47-50, but Amanda Davidson responded with a 3-pointer and Dena Williams made a steal and a lay-up, 47-55. A score by Tanya Bröring and another from Amanda Davidson made it 50-59 with one minute to go. That proved to be sufficient to seal the victory. Lely started fouling in the last minute and Sharon Bos hit 6-out-of-8 free throws. |

The Lions wasted an almost perfect game by Sharon Bos falling to Binnenland 69-78 on their home court in Landsmeer. Bos scored 22 points and pulled down 9 rebounds. Dena Williams had 10 points, 11 rebounds and 4 blocked shots, but couldn't contain Binnenlands center Tri Jackson, who scored 24 points. Amanda Davidson added 14 points and Tanya Bröring chipped in with 12. Coach Laki Lakner said he saw it coming at the beginning of the game. "We lacked intensity and aggressiveness", he said. "I think maybe we underestimated them a little after last week's rout. Although we were not in the game, we were ahead by 16 points in the third period, which says something, but were not able to contain them in the second half of the 3rd period and the 4th. I give them the credits for that." Tri Jackson scored 6 points in the first four minutes as Binnenland raced to 2-9 lead and coach Laki Lakner had to take a time-out. Dena Williams scored six consecutive points to gave the Lions their first lead, 16-15 in the 8th minute of the period. Fueled by Nadine Boesaart two 3-pointers in the second period, the Lions pulled away to a 34-27 lead with 3 minutes on the clock in the quarter. At halftime ProBuild led by 39-31. A basket and a bonus by Amanda Davidson gave the Lions 48-32 lead in the 4th minute of the third period, before Binnenland rediscovered their form and placed a 0-13 run, getting seven points from Laura Kooij. By the end of the quarter Irene Sloof tied the game for Binnenland, 52-52. In the 4th period Binnenland took the lead for good on two baskets by Tri Jackson, 54-58. Irene Sloof widened their lead to 62-76 with 1:56 remaining before Sharon Bos hit two free throws, Amanda Davidson drilled a 3-pointer and Bos hit another pair of free throws, 69-76. However, the Lions' effort was too little and too late. In the last seconds Laura Kooij sealed Binnenland's victory by making two free throws. |

When coach Laki Lakner landed in Landsmeer this summer, he said he came to win prices. Lakner, a native of Croatia, kept his word. Maybe sooner than expected the Lions emerged as serious contenders for the championship. Saturday night they humiliated the reigning Champion of the Netherlands, Yellow Bike Den Helder, who were outclassed in almost every aspect of the game. Amanda Davidson, Friday's MVP, had another solid performance, scoring 20 points for the Lions. Tanya Bröring scored 16 points and was chosen as Saturday's MVP. Dena Williams, came into foul trouble early in the game and was on the court for just 18 minutes, still had 9 points and 9 rebounds and played an important role in the last period. Coach Laki Lakner said he enjoyed the weekend. "We started this season with eight new players and we build the team from scratch. We have some real young, but rough talents, who didn't even know how to witch or to hedge properly. So we were really surprised we lost just two games in the first half of the season. But the girls developed very fast individually and as a team. In the competition we lost from Den Helder and Binnenland, last years finalists of the play offs. And now we routed them by ten and twenty points. So, yes, I'm a happy man tonight." Dena Williams netted the first basket for the Lions and in the third minute Tanya Bröring hit two free throws to gave the Lions the lead for good, 7-6. ProBuild held a 18-15 lead at the end of the quarter. Dena Williams picked up her third foul by that time, defending Naomi Halman, Yellow Bike's 6-4 Dutch center. With her on the bench, the Lions unexpectedly pulled away in the second quarter, placing a 14-2 run, fueled by 3-pointers by Amanda Davidson, Nadine Boesaart and Susan Peters, widening the gap to 35-17 in the 6th minute. At halftime the Lions held a 43-25 lead. In the third period Den Helder managed to cut the deficit to 45-56 and in the 4rd quarter even to 49-58, but Tanya Bröring ensured Yellow Bike would get no closer, drilling a shot form the arc, 49-61. Amanda Davidson added a trey and a score to widen the gap to 66-51 again. After Dena Williams had a field goal and a bonus, Davidson hit four free throws to seal the Lions victory. She scored 11 of her 20 points in the 4rd period. ![]() |
