Kristen Green sank six 3-pointers and scored 30 points to lead the Lions to a 52-87 rout of First Division debutant DAS on their home court in the city of Delft. Rhona McKenzie scored 16 points and grabbed 9 boards. For once, McKenzie was outrebounded by a teammate, for Rachel Witkamp pulled down ten. Forward Nieke van der Zee re-debuted for the Lions, playing for 17 minutes. Coach Brian Benjamin said he mostly liked what he saw. "We worked hard and we started pretty sharp. Defensively we let them score some easy points, but it's always hard to keep the concentration up when you lead by 30 points. On offense, we shot 48% from the floor and outrebounded them completely. Kris played a terrific game. She showed what she can do on offense when she's playing aggressively like this. And Jildis did a really good job orchestrating the offense. So, it was a good game and it's nice way to end the year."

Benjamin was right: the Lions started sharp. Within two minutes Rhona McKenzie scored four points and Kristen Green hit a 3-pointer and another jumper to bring the Lions ahead 2-11. The quarter ended in a 7-20 ProBuild lead. In the second quarter the Lions extended the margin to 9-32 behind five points from Gerda Heinen and a trey by Jildis Pronk. But then sloppiness crept into the Lions' game and DAS managed to come back to 23-40 at the break. In the first minutes of the third period ProBuild placed a 2-12 run behind a 3-pointer by Jildis Pronk, 25-53. DAS just scored eight points in the period and looked at a thirty points deficit at the end of the quarter, 31-61. In the fourth period Kristen Green fired away from behind the arc, hitting four out of four treys and scoring 14 points. With three minutes to go the Lions led by 40 points, 43-83, their biggest lead of the game.

= The ProBuild Lions failed to advance to the next round of the Dutch Cup Competition. In Tubbergen the Perik Jumpers celebrated a 70-66 victory over the Lions. Jildis Pronk led the Lions in scoring with 19 points, Rhona McKenzie had 17 and 10 rebounds. Gerda Heinen chipped in with 12 points. At halftime the score was tied 33-33, but in the third period Perik took a 48-57 lead. The Lions managed to come back to 60-61 with three minutes to go in the fourth quarter behind a series of scores from Jildis Pronk, but Anna Bekkering swished a 3-pointer and Ashley Kelly had a score to bring the Jumpers to a 65-61 lead again. A 3-pointer by Jildis Pronk was answered by Sally Kaznica and Anna Bekkering had an easy layup to score 70-64 after a Lions turnover. Rhona McKenzie's last score cut the deficit to a final 70-66. Coach Brian Benjamin was disappointed. "We still have difficulties handling the pressure of a game like this. It's the quarter final of the Dutch Cup Competition, there's something at stake and like on earlier occasions we can't keep up the concentration, loosing our heads and making too many mistakes. Perik Jumpers is a good offensive team, and they make you pay for that."

Wednesday Quarter Finals Dutch Cup Competition

Probuild-Perik earlier this year Wednesday the ProBuild Lions travel to Tubbergen, far east near the German border, to battle their old rivals Perik Jumpers in the quarter finals of the Dutch Cup Competition. Last season Rhona McKenzie and Nieke van der Zee played for the Jumpers, so there's some extra rivalry. The last meeting of ProBuild and Perik in Landsmeer at the beginning of the season ended in a 70-68 Lions home victory. Perik is one of the league's best offensive teams, averaging 79.6 ppg. Only Cape Holland is more productive, scoring 83.4 points. ProBuild is in 8th seed, just averaging 68.7 ppg. But on the defensive side Perik also ranks high, allowing 75.1 ppg, while the Lions just allow 60,7 ppg and is one of the league's best defensive teams. It's something like the Lakers and the Pistons in last season's NBA finals and we all know how that ended. Mmmm, but maybe the Dutch women's league is something else. We'll see about that Wednesday night, 9 PM CET.

Rhooooooone McKeeeeeenzie Rhona McKenzie scored 29 points and grabbed 18 rebounds to lead the Lions to a 83-47 victory over BC Shooters, who are 1-7 now. The Lions won five out of seven and are in third seed behind BV Lely and Cape Holland Den Helder. After Rhona McKenzie scored the first five points of the game, the Lions never trailed and cruised to an 83-47 rout of the Shooters. Gerda Heinen outscored her younger sister Bettine, who's playing for the Shooters, by six points, pouring in 17, while Bettine scored 11 points. Kristen Green missed all of her seven attempts from behind the arc, but contributed in other ways, still scoring 15 points. Nadine Boesaart scored 13 points, hitting 3-3 treys. Boesaart, who's playing the center position, is 12-23 (52,2%) from behind the 3-pointline over the season.
When rookie Sanne van Eerden scored 19-4 in the fifth minute, it was clear that the Lions had come out of the locker room more ready than they usually are able to do. At the end of the period Gerda Heinen's trey placed the Lions in front 15 points, 25-10. In the second quarter the Lions' defensive intensity got to a low point, allowing the Shooters to stay in the game and to cut their deficit to 44-30 by halftime. After coach Brian Benjamins' locker room talk the Lions started to play defense again, holding the Shooters to just 17 points in the second half. After Kristen Green and Rhona McKenzie both had scored at the beginning of the fourth quarter, 65-39, Nadine Boesaart hit two consecutive 3-pointers, to extend the lead to 75-41. The 6-2 center was 3-3 from behind the arc this game and is 12-23 (52.2%) over the season.
Aftre the game Coach Brian Benjamin said he thought his team played tough defense after the break. "It's still hard to keep the intensity level up the whole game, and we played a terrible second quarter, but we did a good job after the break. Also we rebounded well, 47 boards over the game. Offensively we struggled a little hitting from distance, except for Nadine. We got good looks, took good shots, but the ball just didn't went in, you can't blame anybody for that. On the whole, I thought we played well today."

(Heather Cusick joined Ball State's women's basketball staff this past August in the newly created position of Director of Operations.) Miriam Benjamins The ProBuild Lions gave Binnenland Barendrecht something they don't experience very often - a home loss. Kisten Green led all scorers with 22 points and Rhona McKenzie had another impressive double double with 16 points and 18 boards.

Coach Brian Benjamin said he was happy with this victory. "It's always nice to win a road game against one of the top-teams. Of course we made mistakes, especially in the first half, but we really fought for it this time and that's why we came out victorious. I thought especially Kris and Rhona played a tremendous game."

Benjamins was right: the Lions as a whole did not have an outstanding performance, shooting 33% from the floor and 59% from the free throw line. But the defensive effort was there and Binnenland definitely had trouble finding open looks at the ProBuild basket. 3-point specialist Irene Sloof just hit one shot from behind the arc - Binnenlands only 3-pointer.

Kristen Green hit two treys in the first quarter to carry her team to a 10-12 lead, but Binnenland stayed close during the whole first half of the game. At the end of the second period Marloes Roetgerink scored 27-23, but then Nadine Boesaart hit a 3-pointer for the Lions, 27-26, and Jildis Pronk hit another one in the buzzer, so the Lions went to the locker room with a two point lead, 27-29.

In the third period the lead was extended to seven points, 29-36, but Binnenland managed another comeback. With one minute to go in the fourth quarter the game was tied, 50-50. With 32 seconds on the clock Kristen Green hit a fade-away jumper to tie the score, 52-52. Six seconds later, after Binnenlands Petra Rutgers was fouled under the ProBuild basket, McKenzie hit one of two free throws. Binnenland set up another offense, but again committed an offensive foul and Jildis Pronk was sent to the free throw line with five seconds to play. Pronk, an excellent free throw shooter, missed both attempts and that left Binnenland with one more chance to win the game. However, their last shot attempt didn't even come close to the rim and ProBuild returned to Landsmeer with an important win.

Kristen Green The Lions overcame a slow start and used a balanced attack to roll to a 74-63 victory over Leiderdorp. Kristen Green led five Lions in double figures with 16 points. Rhona McKenzie and Miriam Benjamin both had 13, Nadine Boesaart scored 12 and Gerda Heinen had 10 points. The Lions overcame a slow start, trailing by seven points in the second period, 16-23. A small run, fueled by a Kristen Green-3-pointer and a score by Jildis Pronk, closed the gap to just one point by halftime, 30-31. In the locker room coach Brian Benjamin let his team know he was not amused by the lack of sharpness it apparently showed. Probably as a result ProBuild started to show its teeth defensively in the third period. Within in two minutes Rhona McKenzie scored and Kristen Green and Nadine Boesaart both hit a trey to take the Lions to a 38-31 lead. A series of scores by reserve forward Miriam Benjamin, who reached a career- high 13 points, next widened the gap to 56-45 at the end of the quarter. When Nadine Boesaart swished her fourth 3-pointer in the 6th minute of the last period, 69-51, the Lions registered a game high 18 points lead. Leiderdorps Theresa LeCuyer scored 27 points to lead her team.

Naydeen Rhona McKenzie scored a season high 28 points and had 14 rebounds as the Lions routed Celeritudo Tigers from Groningen in their second home game of the season. Kristen Green had an also season high 24 points and Jildis Pronk chipped in with 13. De Lions were 49.2% from the floor and 85.7% from the free throw line. Good numbers, but coach Brian Benjamins still wasn't wholly satisfied. "We worked hard, I'll credit that, but we made way too many mistakes defensively. But of course I'm happy with this victory. I thought Kristen played very well today and showed what she could do on both ends of the floor. And of course Rhona also put up some impressive numbers."

ProBuild never trailed after Jildis Pronk made the first points of the game. After Ashley Augspurger scored 10-8 for Groningen, Kristen Green sank her first 3-pointer and next set Rhona McKenzie up for a lay-up, 17-8. The first quarter ended in a 19-10 Lions lead. ProBuild extended the lead in the second period to 30-12 behind 3-pointers from Nadine Boesaart en Jildis Pronk, but the Tigers came back to 30-22 in a 0-10 run. A Kristen Green 3-pointer next started a 9-0 Lions run and the break was reached with a 39-24 Lions lead. In the third quarter Celeritudo managed to come back to 50-37, but the next two 3-pointers of Kristen Green widened the gap to 20 points, 58-38. In the fourth period the Tigers once again came back, 62-51, but next Rhona McKenzie decided to put an end to it. The Canadian forward scored 10 consecutive points to make sure the victory stayed in Landsmeer. Gerda Heinen ended the game in the last second with two free throws.

Naydeen Jildis Pronk scored 14 points and Rhona McKenzie had a double-double with 13 points and 18 rebounds, but Lely's Marijn Neydorff hit two 3-pointers in the fourth period to send the Lions to a 59-56 loss on Saturday. Jildis Pronk led the Lions in scoring with 14 points and Kristen Green chipped in with 11 points. Rhona McKenzie, who was ill during the week, had a tough night offensively against former Franklin Pierce player Susan Ocitti. McKenzie scored just two field goals, but was 9-9 from the line.

ProBuild had a slow start, trailing by 13 points at the beginning of the second period. But two scores and a free throw by Kristen Green started a comeback. McKenzie took over and a 3-pointer from Nadine Boesaart brought the Lions in the lead for the first time, 18-21. Halftime was reached with the score 24-21 in favor of the home side. Both teams stayed close during the third period and were tied at the end of the quarter, 42-42. But then Marijn Neyndorff hit her fourth 3-pointer of the game at the beginning of the fourth period, immediately followed by her fifth, 53-44. The Lions managed another comeback behind free throws from Rhona McKenzie and 3-pointers by Jildis Pronk and Kristen Green, 57-56. With 30 seconds to go Lely milked the shot clock to set up pointguard Tanya Bröring for a driving layup and a score. The Lions had just six seconds left, but Kristen Green managed to reach Gerda Heinen for a potential game tying 3-pointer in the last second. Heinen pulled up and was fouled. Unfortunately all of her three attempts from the line failed.

Coach Brian Benjamin gave the credits to Lely. "They came out the locker room more prepared than we did. We're the more talented team, but we couldn't match their intensity this game. They did a good job on Rhona defensively. But we started playing basketball too late and made too many mistakes. To leave a known spot-up shooter like Marijn Neyndorff open for two consecutive 3-pointers when the game is on the line, isn't a smart thing to do. It cost us the game."

Miriam Benjamins The ProBuild Lions used a balanced scoring and a fast start to down the Nijmegen Wildcats, 58-70, and advance to the quarter finals of the Dutch Cup Competition. Rhona Mckenzie led the Lions with 17 points, Gerda Heinen scored 12, Nadine Boesaart 11, Jildis Pronk 10 and Kristen Green 9. After the first quarter the Lions led by nine points, 15-24, and managed to widen the gap to 19-37 in the second period behind 3-pointers from Jildis Pronk and Linda de Jong. At halftime the score was 27-43. The Wildcats staged a comeback in the third period, 40-52, and came within ten points in the fourth when Marjan Dinissen scored 48-57. But it's always good to have a center who can shoot the trey, as was proved by Nadine Boesaart, who hit three times from behind the the arc in the quarter to keep the Lions in front.
