Dena Williams arrives in the Netherlands
Author: Henk Wals

Dutch
Today the missing piece of the puzzle for the ProBuild Lions basketball team arrived on Schiphol Airport: 6-4 center Dena Williams , who played for Bradley University. A week before the Chrismas Holidays may seem to be a strange time to start a European basketball career, but on 6 January the Final Four tournament is scheduled and Williams has to be ready to play by then.
"It takes some time to get adjusted to our style of basketball and learning all our plays", coach Laki Lakner said. So we're going to work hard the next two weeks to get Dena ready and involved in the team."
What are the excpectations?
Lakner: "We're satisfied with the results until now; given the fact we had no real center. We're in second seed. Susan Peters and Nadine Boesaart, who both are 6-2 and filled the position, both don't like to play with their backs to the basket and rather shoot the 3-pointer. Of course tall girls hitting treys definitely have an advantage, but we're getting not enough rebounds and not enough threat from inside. Also we need a defensive stopper in the paint. So, hopefully Dena can provide some of those skills."
Dena Williams did not arrive until now, because she had to finish her study first. In april 2005 Williams signed a training camp contract with the Connecticut Sun of the WNBA, but did not make the team and decided to pursue an athletic career in Europe.
A first-team All-Missouri Valley Conference selection as a senior, Williams led the Braves in scoring (13.3 ppg), rebounding (8.3 rpg) and blocked shots (59) in 2004-05. Williams ended her career as Bradley's career leader in rebounds and blocked shots.
On Bradley University's Website there's a posting on Dena Williams' signing with ProBuild Lions.

Lions Victorious in Delft, 49-57

Dutch Box Score
This time the Lions had more difficulties beating DAS, battling on its home court in Delft. It took ProBuild almost three quarters to post a double-digit margin, allowing DAS to cut the deficit to 8 points again at the closing of the game.
Tanya Bröring led the Lions with 18 points, Belinda Bos added 12 points and Amanda Davidson 11. Sharon Bos, who scored 21 points in Wednesday's game, scored just 2 points tonight. Nevertheless she made herself useful, logging 10 rebounds and 6 steals.
Coach Laki Lakner said he was disappointed by the performance of his team. "With all due respect to DAS, we're a much better basketball team and we should be able to beat them by thirty or forty points. But tonight the game stayed close until well within the third quarter. Defensively it was not so bad, but offensively we couldn't get it done tonight. We lacked focus and determination, probably because we won Wednesday's game so easily. "
Gerda Heinen, who had six points, said a game like tonight's made her think of quitting basketball, getting married and have babies, spending the rest of her life sitting on the couch, watching TV.
The good news was the Lions placed themselves for the Final Four tournament at the beginning of January, clinching the third seed with tonight's win and one game to go in the first half of the competition.
At halftime the Lions led by three points, 21-24. In the third period DAS gained the lead again, 29-28 but a 3-pointer by Amanda Davidson fueled a 11-2 Lions run, with six points from Tanya Bröring. At the end of the quarter ProBuild held a 34-43 lead.
In the fourth period the gap was widened to 39-54, but through three consecutive 3-pointers by Canadian Kizzy Lopez DAS narrowed the deficit to 49-57 at the end of the game. Lopez made 24 points for DAS, 12 in the fourth period.

Dutch Box Score
Amanda Davidson helped the ProBuild Lions to overcome a sloppy second quarter and a red-hot Rachel Wojdowksi. Davidson scored 25 points and had 8 rebounds as the Lions posted a 85-60 victory over Celeritudo Groningen, who got 26 points from Wojdowksi. Sharon Bos had 16 points, Tanya Bröring scored 14 and Gerda Heinen chipped in with 11. At halftime the Lions trailed by 3 points, 38-41.
"We played a good second half", coach Laki Lakner said. "We couldn't pull away in the first half, but did a nice job defensively in the third quarter. In the locker room at halftime I told the team to really get on their man in the second half, and that I expected them to be up by ten after five minutes. That's exactly what happened."
The Lions held a 20-10 lead in the first period before Groningen placed a 9-2 run, behind 7 points of Rachel Wojdowski, who was unstoppable in the first half. Sharon Bos had a layup and added a bonus free throw to score 38-35 in the last minute of the second period, but Patrice Bryant had two points and Rachel Wojdowski scored four to give Groningen a 38-41 edge at halftime.
In the third period Groningen held their lead in the first minutes, 42-45, but next the Lions put up a 16-1 spurt, capped by Sharon Bos' layup midway through the quarter that put the Lions in front 58-46. At the beginning of the last quarter Wojdowski and Bryant both were sidelined with four fouls, and the Lions took advantage of that, widening the gap to 77-56 in the 5th minute.
Rachel Wojdowski was held to six points in the second half by ProBuild's defensive specialist Gerda Heinen.

ProBuild Lions Top Perik Jumpers, 65-55
Author: Henk Wals
Date: November 19, 2005
Dutch Box Score
Gerda Heinen scored 7 of her 15 points in the last four minutes of the last period to lead the Lions to a 65-55 victory over Perik Jumpers. At the beginning of the period ProBuild trailed by one point, after having erased a 9-point deficit in the third quarter. Tanya Bröring scored a season-high 23 points and Amanda Davidson had 16, including three 3-pointers.
"I thought we showed character in the fourth period", coach Laki Lakner said after the game. "Of course, like a few times before, this season, we let it slip away earlier in the game, but fought ourselves back into the game. We're still not able to play consistently, but we're a young team and still improving by the game."
Amanda Davidson sank three 3-pointers in the first quarter to give the Lions a 24-17 lead, but in the second period the level of defensive intensity dropped, which enabled Perik Jumpers to place a 0-12 run at the end of the quarter. By halftime the Lions looked at a 31-37 deficit.
In the third period the gap was even widened to 36-45, but ProBuild came back behind 3-pointers from Susan Peters and Tanya Bröring, 42-45. Two more scores by Bröring and Peters gave the Lions a one-point lead again, 46-45.
In the 7th minute of the last period ProBuild still led by one point, 56-55. Coach Laki Lakner called a time-out and told his players to drive hard to the basket, either to score or draw a foul. Gerda Heinen responded by making a lay-up and hitting a short jumper to give the Lions a 60-55 lead. A flagrant foul by Melissa Pater brought Heinen to the free-throw line, from where she hit one of two shots. After the Lions had inbounded the ball, Gerda Heinen was fouled again and this time made both free throws, 63-55, to seal the Lions' victory. Tanya Bröring's lay-up in the last second was only for the record.

The Dutch Cup Competition is being held in addition to the regular competition from October through March. That's what happened to ProBuild's second team Friday, after loosing from first Division team Perik Jumpers, 53-81. ProBuild's juniors went down fighting, but were out-rebounded and out-scored in the paint by Perik's American frontcourt. Melissa Pater scored 26 points for the Jumpers.
At halftime the score was 27-39. With the Lions Bettine Heinen scored 11 points and Sanne van Eerden had 10.

ProBuild 83, Lely 76

Dutch Box Score Pictures
Susan Peters knocked down four 3-pointers and had 17 points and 7 rebounds to lead the Lions to a 83-76 victory on Lely Amsterdam. ProBuild had four other players in double figures: Tanya Bröring scored 16, Gerda Heinen 13, Sharon Bos 11 and Belinda Bos 10. Amanda Davidson played a solid game at point guard and scored 8 points.
Coach Laki Lakner was happy with the victory on his former team. "Lely is a good team", he said. "Like us, they have one American player and one national team player and their frontcourt is as good as any team's in the league. But our bench is a little deeper and I think in the end that made the difference."
Lakner probably was right about that. In the second half Peters, Bröring, Boesaart and Sharon Boss all were sidelined with foul trouble, but players like Belinda Bos and Karina Worku came from the bench to substitute them more than adequately.
By halftime the Lions led by 10 points, 41-31. Amanda Davidson, Gerda Heinen en Susan Peters all had field goals to widen the gap to 47-31 in the first minutes of the third period, but in the next minutes the Lions saw their lead melt away, picking up fouls bringing Lely to the free throw line.
Belinda Bos, normally a starter, was hindered by a knee-injury which sidelined her last game, and was brought into the game only in the last minutes of the third period, when ProBuild trailed by one point. Bos responded by scoring a field goal and hitting four free throws, giving the Lions a 61-54 lead at the end of the quarter.
In the fourth period the Lions managed to stay on the good site of the score, but just weren't able to shut down their opponents, allowing them to dismantle several deficits. In the last minute Amanda Davidson drove to the basket to score 80-73, but Kim Lawrence answered with a 3-pointer, 80-76, and immediately fouled Gerda Heinen, who made one of two free throws. With just a few seconds on the clock Lely produced an air ball, which was rebounded by Tany Bröring, who was also fouled. Bröring didn't miss from the line and brought the score to 83-76.
