Saturday ProBuild Lions host Challenge Sports-Renes Binnenland. A few weeks ago Binnenland announced the signing of a new sponsor: Challenge Sports. As a consequence the first ladies team moved from Barendrecht to Rotterdam.
Shortly after the presentation of the new sponsor the signing of a foreign player was announced: point guard Jeanette Woodberry, who played for Davenport University in NAIA Division II, scoring almost 20 points per game in her last season. Before moving to the NAIA Woodberry played for Wright State University in NCAA Division I. In her sophomore year she scored 10.5 ppg.
In Binnenland's last game against Grasshoppers Woodberry posted 23 points to prove she can make baskets in the Dutch competition too. Binnenland beat Grasshoppers 75-62, its only victory so far.
With the Lions Molly McDowell had both her shoulders x-rayed earlier this week. It looks like the injury is not too serious and McDowell hopes to make some minutes on Saturday.
Game starts at 9:30 PM CET.

Anouk Biesters scored 20 points and Ilana Vergunst hit five 3-pointers as ProBuild Lions posted a lopsided 91-51 win over Wereldtickets Leiderdorp.
The Lions turned the game into an early rout as they jumped to a 22-point halftime lead and led by as much as 48 in the fourth quarter.
Marie Hoogstraten scored 14 points and Jasmijn Overbeeke chipped in with 10.
With Wereldtickets Americans Jeana Hoffman (19 points) and Venessa Wilt (16 points) carried a disproportional large part of the scoring load, with the rest of the team contributing not more than 16 points.
The Lions played with an all-Dutch line-up most of the game.
Molly McDowell sat out the game with a shoulder injury.
Point guard Chanel Ross was called to the bench by coach Laki Lakner in the third minute and did not return on the court. Lakner said Ross did not start sharp enough and called the wrong plays.
"Especially from my American players I expect a professional attitude", he said. "And if they do not have the discipline to behave like a pro, they can sit until they learn how to listen and do what I tell them to. It is as simple as that."
Forward Gerda Heinen was directed to the point and ran the team for the rest of the game.
From that moment on everything went smoothly.
ProBuild trailed 6-7 when Ilana Vergunst came in to replace Ross. Cold of the bench Vergunst drained two 3-pointers around a trey from Belinda Bos, which put the Lions up 15-7. At the end of the first period the Lions led 23-7.
Lakner, who went to Leiderdorp to see Wereldtickets' game against Celeritas on Thursday, said he was satisfied with the way his team played defense for the first time this season. "Thursday I was impressed by Jeana Hoffman, who hit seven 3-pointers", he said. "I did not want to give her any space to repeat that performance on our court".
The Lions did not.
Nobody from Wereldtickets got much space. ProBuild played smothering defense most of the game, causing their opponents to violate the 24-seconds rule as well as the 5-seconds rule a number of times.
Forward Marie Hoogstraten came in for Jasmijn Overbeeke and produced a burst of 14 points in the second period. At halftime ProBuild led 40-18.
In the third quarter the Lions fired away freely at Wereldtickets' basket, with Ilana Vergunst draining another three 3-pointers, Anouk Biesters hitting two and Nadine Boesaart and Belinda Bos both one. At the beginning of the 4th period the margin was stretched to 75-33.
ProBuild's biggest lead was 88-40 in the 8th minute of the last period. Only then defensive concentration started to slip away a bit, and Wereldtickets was allowed to put up a late 3-11 run behind 6 points from Venessa Wilt.

Saturday ProBuild Lions hosts Wereldticket.nl Leiderdorp, a team which was absent for a few years on the highest level of Dutch basketball, but now has returned to the First Division. Leiderdorp is a young team of mainly juniors. An important role is played by both American players, Jeana Hoffman and Venessa Wilt.
Hoffman is a guard who played for the University of South Dakota (NCAA Division II), where she averaged 17,6 ppg and 3,7 rebounds pg. Wilt also played on Div II level at Cal State Bernadino. In her senior year the 6-2 center scored 18.4 ppg and grabbed 13.7 rebounds.
Last week Wereldtickets celebrated it first win. At their home court they beat Challenge Sports/Renes Binnenland 63-59. Venessa Wilt had an impressive double-double, with 23 points and 17 rebounds.
It is not certain if Molly McDowell will be able to play on Saturday. She suffers from a shoulder injury and is scheduled to have an MRI on Monday.

ProBuild Routs Grasshoppers, 78-51

Reserve center Nadine Boesaart hit five 3-pointers and scored 15 points to lead 11 scoring players as the Lions cruised to a 78-51 rout of the Katwijk Grasshoppers. Marie Hoogstraten, who also came from the bench, scored 12 points and Chanel Ross added 11 points, 7 assists and 5 steals.
Grasshoppers was without their main scorer (and former Lion) Rianne Philippo, who was travelling abroad. With ProBuild Molly McDowell had to step out of the game in the second period with what looked like a shoulder injury.
Coach Laki Lakner planned to use the game for working on defensive automatisms and asked his team to concentrate on defense, but showed signs of frustration towards the end of the game when the Lions started to play sloppy, turning over the ball and allowing the Grasshoppers some easy points.
Lakner used all 12 players. Nobody was on the court more than 23 minutes.
ProBuild shot 47.7% from the floor and 44.4% from behind the 3-point line.
The Lions started the game with an 11-0 run before Kerri Jilesen made the first points for Grasshoppers. After the first period ProBuild led 23-12.
Molly McDowell gave a beautiful feed to Marie Hoogstraten, 30-15, but a shoulder injury forced her to step off the court soon after that.
A new burst followed, and the Lions pulled to a 46-16 lead behind two baskets by Marie Hoogstraten and a 3-pointer from Nadine Boesaart. At the break ProBuild led 46-21.
In the 9th minute of the third quarter Boesaart drained another trey to mark the largest margin of the game, 62-29. In the 4th concentration seemed to slip away a little. Nadine Boesaart buried two more treys, but on the defensive end the Lions allowed Grasshoppers to score some cheap baskets.
With 2:48 minutes on the clock ProBuild led 76-46. After a time-out by coach Lakner Grasshoppers scored 5 consecutive points, 76-51, before Mara Hessling made the final basket for ProBuild.

Midweek Game vs STOL Grasshoppers

Wednesday ProBuild hosts STOL Grasshoppers for a midweek game. Despite having 3-0 losing record Grasshoppers is a force to be reckoned with.
Coach Martin Moerman and his team had a bad start, losing 66-83 to Lely Amsterdam. Next they faced two tough opponents: Woonbron DAS Delft and HLB Accountants Den Helder. Both games turned into a loss by a margin of 15 points: 85-70 and 55-70.
Former Lions-player Rianne Philippo scored 21 and 22 points in last two games.
In the pre-season ProBuild and Grasshoppers met in a practice game, which the Lions won by 17 points, 56-39. The last lost game to Grasshoppers was recorded in March 2004, when ProBuild went down 64-52 in Katwijk.

Molly McDowell scored 22 points to lead the Lions to a 64-69 victory on Perik Jumpers. Chanel Ross contributed 19 points and Anouk Biesters added 15.
Traditionally Perik is a hard team to beat on their home court. Coach Laki Lakner , who saw his team struggle on offense, was quite satisfied with the result.
"We held them to 64 points", he said. "That was good."
"Offensively we did not make our 3-points shots", he continued, "So they were not forced to guard us closely, which made it hard to drive the lane also."
"I have to credit Perik Jumpers for a well-played game", Lakner said. "They smartly capitalized on our weak points and they played hard. I think it's the best team we met in this competition so far."
The Lions shot a poor 2-out-of-20 from behind the 3-point line, while shooting a decent 39.4% overall and a rather good 83,3% on free throws.
ProBuild had trouble guarding 6-2 center Ashley Langen, who was deadly efficient and scored 20 points tonight.
Perik took an 8-point lead with Langen scoring 6 points. Coach Laki Lakner had to take his first time-out early in the game and apparently this had some effect. ProBuild put up a 3-21 run to take 11-23 lead in the 3rd minute of the second period.
After coach Lakner boldly had taken all of his starters to the bench it was Perik's turn to run, however. Myrthe Beld hit two 3-pointers and scored 8 points to have her team gain the lead again, 29-28, in the 7th minute. At halftime the Lions trailed 35-34.
In the second half the teams traded baskets and game stayed close. ProBuild had a 4-point lead at the start of the last period, 53-57.
Coach Laki Lakner, who stayed with his starting five the whole second half, changed the defense to a zone. That worked for a while and the Lions put up a 53-63 margin in the 4rd minute. But Perik took a last run behind 4 points from Laura Dinkins and a 3-pointer from Myrthe Beld, 62-63.
Another burst from the Lions, with a driving lay-up from Chanel Ross, two free throws from Anouk Biesters and a jumper from Molly McDowell, pulled the game away. ProBuild took a decisive 62-69 lead. Sharon Beld's basket in the last minute cut the final margin to 64-69.

Saturday ProBuild Visits Tubbergen
Author: Henk Wals

Dutch
Saturday ProBuild Lions travel to the village of Tubbergen near the German border to meet Perik Jumpers, the former team of ProBuild's new forward Marie Hoogstraten.
Last year Perik Jumpers revived from a mediocre period, advancing to the semi finals of the play-offs, before they were eliminated by Yellow Bike.
Marie Hoogstraten was replaced by the equally talented Lotte Hulshoff, who returned from a sabbatical year in a lower division. As one of the foreign players Ashly Langen was recuited, a 6-2 center from the University of North Dakota (NCAA Division II). Langen scored 16 ppg and grabbed 8.6 rpg.
In her first two games for Perik Langen did a fine job, scoring 8 points and pulling down 11 rebounds vs Renes Binnenland and 16 points and 13 rebounds vs Wereldtickets Leiderdorp.
Also American Alysa Klein was signed in June, but in September the 6-3 center was waived because, as the Perik-website put it, "she failed to make an impression on the coaching staff".
Klein was replaced by Laura Dinkins, a 6-0 forward from the Universiy of Northern Arizona, where she scored 15,9 ppg and had 8.4 rebounds. Dinkins was elected as defensive player of the year in the Big Sky Conference. In her first game for Perik vs Wereldtickets she came in early foul trouble and stayed stuck in single digits.
Meanwhile the Lady Lions recovered from their wild weekend in Belgium and at practice coaches Lakner and Van West continued to work on turning the team into the well oiled machine they designed it to be.
Anyway, the parts of the machine are in excellent condition. There no injured players.
Game starts at 8:30 PM CET.

Lions Party in Belgium

This weekend ProBuild Lions was invited to participate in the Opening Day of the Belgian ladies basketball competition.
The nine Belgium first division teams gathered in the city of Machelen near Brussels to play their first games in a two days-event. ProBuild's role was to make the number of teams even.
The Lions were set to meet De Clercq Stortbeton Waregem, last year's champions.
ProBuild apparently was not wholly recovered yet from Friday's game versus AutoCAD Amazone and lost 64-53. Chanel Ross led the Lions with 18 points and Molly McDowell had 13.
ProBuild was just 28% from the floor, while hit Waregem 48% of their shots. The Lions were outrebounded 48-22.
After the game there was official banquet at the Holiday Inn hotel. All players dressed up nicely. There was pink and white champagne to drink and exquisites like stuffed cuckoo were served at the tables.
Even coach Lake Lakner, a man of refined culinary taste, was impressed. "It's the best stuffed cuckoo I've ever eaten," he said.
The ProBuild players took the lead in a successful attempt of the players to change the official character of the dinner into something more informal like a dance party, and by the time dessert was served everybody was singing and dancing on their chairs.
The climax was reached when the band set in ProBuild's victory hymne,Vandaag is Rood (Today is Red) and everybody was singing along.
All in all, it was a great weekend.

The ProBuild Lions used a balanced attack to beat AutoCAD Amazone 70-59 at home.
Anouk Biesters scored 15 points, Molly McDowell added 11 and Chanel Ross chipped in with 10 points. Coach Laki Lakner used all 12 players, of whom 11 helped to share the scoring load.
Chanel Ross and Jasmijn Overbeeke both scored 4 points as the Lions looked sharp in the first minutes of the game and build a 10-2 lead.
Amazone narrowed the margin to 12-11, but Anouk Biesters hit a 3-pointer, 19-13. Next she stole the ball and dished it to Chanel Ross, who had an easy lay-up to make it 21-13 at the end of the quarter.
In the 8th minute of the second period the Lions had built their lead to 37-21, but a sloppy last two minutes allowed Amazone to crawl back to a ten-point margin at halftime, 39-29.
Molly McDowell started the second half with a 3-pointer. Marloes Renskers, who totaled 17 points in the game, made it 49-38 in the 6th minute, but ProBuild used a 9-0 rally to build a 20 point-margin at the start of the fourth period: 58-38.
Jasmijn Overbeeke and Anouk Biesters of ProBuild and Audrey Tabon of Amazone meanwhile all fouled out. In the 5th minute of the last period ProBuild still led 65-47.
Next Amazone's Sharon Bos ran into Nadine Boesaarts elbow and had to be treated for a broken nose and what looked like a concussion. The game was delayed for 30 minutes while waiting for an ambulance.
After the game was restarted the Lions looked cold, allowing Amazone to narrow the gap to 67-55.

This weekend ProBuild Lions travelled to Belgium to play two exihibition games. Saturday the Lions played Dexia Namur, a strong team with a number of international stars. Saturday ProBuild was without Marie Hoogstraten and Anouk Biesters, who were with the Dutch national team. Molly McDowell was not 100% due to illness and Kris Biesters was injured.
In Namur ProBUild lost to Dexia 66-46, but the game stayed close until the third period.
Sunday Anouk Biesters and Marie Hoogstraten joined their teammates to battle St Katelijne Waver. Again, the game was close, but this time it stayed close until the last minute, when ProBuild led 71-73, but allowed St Katelijne to pull the game away in the dying seconds of the game. That is, with a little help from the referee, according to coach Laki Lakner, who otherwise was very happy with the way his team played during the weekend.
"Those were very strong teams we played against", he said. "Both games were of a very high level and we stayed in it against two team who have maybe have five times our budget to spend. I was really proud of my team. It was a very useful and inspirational weekend."

Chanel Ross scored 22 points and Molly McDowell added 17 as ProBuild Lions started the 2008-2009 season with a 62-80 victory on Celeritas Groningen.
Anouk Biesters contributed 13 points.
The Lions built a 19 points margin in the second period and cruised to an 18-point win without getting in any trouble in the second half.
Coach Laki Lakner was not impressed, however.
"There was no doubt in my mind that we would win the game here", he said. "But though the score looks pretty convincing, the way we executed our plays did not. We played sloppy at times, making too many mistakes, especially on defense."
The game stayed close until the 8th minute of the first period, when the teams were tied 15-15. Free throws by Chanel Ross and Jasmijn Overbeeke around a basket from Molly McDowell allowed ProBuild to build a 15-21 lead at the end of the period.
Rachel Roubehie Fissa made it17-21 for Celeritas, but next the Lions placed a decisive 0-20 run to put up a 17-41 lead in the 8th minute of the quarter.
At the break ProBuild led by 19 points, 25-44.
In the second half the Lions seemed to be a little less concentrated, allowing a number of easy baskets and committing a little too many turnovers, but Molly McDowell, Chanel Roos and Anouk Biesters took care of the offense, keeping the margin more or less in tact.
After the third period ProBuild led 44-64.
Nadine Boesaart came of the bench in the fourth to hit two 3-pointers.

Season About to Start

Saturday ProBuild Lions travel to the northern city of Groningen to meet Celeritas for the first game of the season. With coach Hanko Meekel replaced by coaches Ed Molthoff and Frans Hiddink and several players leaving for other clubs, it looks like Celeritudo went into a state of rebuilding. A great opportunity for the juniors who moved up to the first team to fill the empty spots.
At point guard Celeritas signed Andrea Verdegan, a 5-9 point guard from South Dakota State University.
Meanwhile in Landsmeer things are running rather smoothly. There are no injuries and coaches Laki Lakner and Dwight van West have 12 healthy 12 players at their disposal. Everybody is looking forward to the first game of the season.
The game starts at 7:30 PM CET.

Lions Win Own Tournament

The cup of the first ProBuild Ladies Champions Basketball Tournament stays in Landsmeer. In the Finals ProBuild Lions beat HLB Accountants, 75-60. However, the reigning Dutch champions did not leave Landsmeer empty handed as their center Marloes Roetgerink earned the tournament's MVP-title, scoring 60 points in two games.
After HLB beat the Belgium champions Stortbeton Declerq Waregem 71-61, ProBuild came out to rout T71 Basket Diddeleng from Luxembourg 79-55.
In the losers finals the Belgians stayed in front of the Luxembourgers, 82-58. In the finals ProBuild Lions met their old foes from Den Helder, which was an interesting match-up to measure strengths with the new competition about to start next week.
However, the measurement was a little distorted by HLB accountants being short on personnel. It lost star player Leonie Kooij and Francis Donders to foreign teams and did not sign any replacements yet. Laura Kooij and Anna Vicenzetto were injured.
ProBuild had no trouble staying in front of their opponents from the first ball contact on.
The Lions played attractively. The new American guard duo Molly McDowell and Chanel Ross already showed signs of greatness, both being able to score as well as dish the ball.
McDowell scored 19 points and had 8 assists. Chanel Ross contributed 9 points. Anouk Biesters had 13 points, her sister Kris Biesters added 12 points, and Marie Hoogstraten 9.
With the Americans, Jasmijn Overbeeke, Anouk Biesters and Gerda Heinen coach Laki Lakner has a formidable starting five, but he also has a very deep bench at his disposal. All of the reserves can be brought into the came to provide instance offense or defense, as Kris Biesters showed yesterday by entering the game in the fourth quarter, scoring 10 consecutive points, grabbing two rebounds and stealing the ball twice.
Coach Lakner said he was happy with winning the tournament, but that he had seen a lot of details to improve on. "Defensively we allowed two many easy baskets. Offensively we passed the ball not fast enough. But I am confident these things will come, we just started practicing three weeks ago. I think there is great potential here."

Practice games vs Grasshoppers and Osnabrück

Today the Lions hosted STOL Grasshoppers for a practice game. The Lions started practicing two weeks ago. Coaches Laki Lakner and Dwight van West designed a complete new set of plays, so the first weeks were a great deal about the X's and O's.
And conditioning, not to forget. Trainer Rene Wormhoudt introduced some ultra-modern equipment to measure and monitor the condition of the players, aiming to increase their condition gradually in a balanced manner.
Meanwhile fitness trainer Marcus Torenstra worked during the summer with the players to increase their strength.
This weekend Anouk Biesters and Marie Hoogstraten returned from their tour with the national team, which won four of their five games and is well on the way to promote to a European A-status.
The Lions had no trouble beating Grasshoppers, despite Anouk Biesters, Mara Hessling, Kris Biesters and Marie Hoogstraten stayed in street clothes due to various reasons.
Gerda Heinen and Belinda Bos both scored 10 points, leading the Lions to a 56-39 win. Heinen also led the team in rebounds, grabbing 11 boards.
Tomorrow ProBuild hosts the German team of Osnabrück for another practice game, which starts at 3 PM CET.
