Coming weekend marks the start of the second round of the preliminary competition, which is to culminate in the Final Four tournament of December. In the Elite B section ProBuild Lions visits AutoCAD Amazone in the town of Vleuten near Utrecht.
ProBuild survived the first round without any losses. Consequently, Amazone didn't, but limited their defeats to just one. In Landsmeer AutoCAD was routed by the Lions 88-60.
What we have to keep in mind, however, is that three of coach Jan Poels's starters were injured then and AutoCAD had just 7 healthy players. This time things look a little brighter for the Amazones, with just Dutch national team player Francis Donders still recovering from a knee-injury.
If the Lions pull out a win Sunday, they are very close to having earned a Final Four spot. If they lose, they have to tolerate Amazone next to them in the ranking.
Game starts at 3:30 PMCET on Sunday.
Probuild Routs Eurosped 58-82

Marie Hoogstraten scored 17 points as the ProBuild Lions routed Eurosped Twente 58-82 at their home in the town of Tubbergen.
Molly McDowell had 14 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals. Jasmijn Overbeeke and Kati Harty both scored 10 points.
Coach Laki Lakner said he thought his team did an admirable job. "Looking at their roster Eurosped is one of the top teams of the league. Being routed on their own court does not happen to them often.
"Defensively our goal was to keep post players Theresa LeCuyer and Kierah Kimbrough out of the game. They combine for an average of 40 points on a good night, but we kept them to 26. The other goal was to take their fast break game away. We studied the DVD of their last game and figured out how to do that. And it worked."
Lakner said it pleased him to see almost everybody was involved in scoring. "It was great to see one of our rookies, Eline Vink, come of the bench in the final period to hit two straight 3-pointers."
After the first quarter ProBuild led 14-21. Marie Hoogstraten kicked off the second period by nailing a trey and Ilana Vergunst scored 7 straight points, putting ProBuild up 16-31.
At the break ProBuild led 24-40.
In the third period Eurosped managed to cut their deficit to 31-43, but next Kati Harty drained three consecutive 3-pointers to widen ProBuild's margin to 33-52.
At the start of the 4th quarter the Lions led 43-65 when Molly McDowell, Jasmijn Overbeeke and Marie Hoogstraten all made baskets to give ProBuild its biggest lead, 43-71.
At this time Laki Lakner called his starters to the bench to let his reserves finish the game.
Sunday the ProBuild Lions will travel all the way accross the country to the town of Tubbergen near the German border to battle Eurosped Twente.
Eurosped went through a rebuilding process this summer after signing a new sponsor. American veteran center Theresa LeCuyer moved in from DAS Delft. LeCuyer, who also played for ProBuild half a season, earning a champions medal, received her college education at the University of North Dakota, as did newly signed forward Kierah Kimbrough, who went there two years after LeCuyer started het professional career in Europe.
With LeCuyer, Kimbrough, Natalie Hudec, a veteran guard with a Canadian and a Slowakian passport, Norwegian Torunn Ytrehus and Janine Schweiger from Germany Eurosped resembles something of the Foreign Legion.
The Dutch section of Eurosped is headed by the two Beld-sisters, Sharon and Myrthe, who both play for the Dutch national team, and their talented youngest sister Judith.
A formidable roster, no doubt, but after two wins, over Grasshoppers and Lely, last weekend Eurosped took an unexpected 81-68 loss to AutoCAD Amazone in Utrecht.
Sunday, at their home court, the ladies from Eurosped no doubt will be looking to redeem themselves when they host the ProBuild Lions in an afternoon's game.
Game starts at 4.30 PM CET.

Kati Harty scored 18 points, Marie Hoogstraten added 12 and Belinda Bos contributed 11, as ProBuild handed visiting BV Lely its third straight loss of the season.
Molly McDowell had a poor shooting night, finishing 1-out-of-9 from the floor, totaling 4 points.
It was the Lions' fourth game in eight days. Jasmijn Overbeeke was dressed in street clothes, watching the game from the bench. Wednesday she lightly sprained her ankle.
Coach Laki Lakner said he did not set the goals too high this game. "Just winning the game was good enough. I asked the team to focus on executing our offensive plays right. And I was glad to see we did run some good offenses during some stretches. "
The Lions shot 38.1% from the floor and 30.4% from behind the 33-point line.
Lely took a 2-7 lead, but Kati Harty hit a 3-pointer to even the score, 7-7, and converted two free throws to put ProBuild up for good. At the end of the first period ProBuild led 20-11.
In the second quarter Lely closed the gap to 20-11, but at intermission ProBuild had restored the margin to 12 points: 33-21.
Again Lely cut the deficit to 4 points, when Romy Stijsiger made it 38-34 in the fourth minute. But next Marijn Neyndorff, who was having her birthday, nailed a 3-pointer . Within a minute Belinda Bos did the same to restore the margin to 10 points.
At the start of the last period ProBuild led 49-40. Belinda Bos made two straight baskets and Kati Harty buried her fourth 3-pointer to extend the lead to 56-40. The rest of the game Lely and ProBuild exchanged scores, keeping the margin more or less intact.
Saturday ProBuild Lions hosts Lely Amsterdam. Lely lost two of its veteran players to ProBuild this summer, as Karen Heinen and Marijn Nijendorff both decided to sign with the Lions after a playing for the Amsterdam team for quite a number of years.
On the other hand ProBuild's Kris Biesters, the sister of Anouk, signed with Lely, making it all look like some kind of NBA-trade, which of course it wasn't. In the Netherlands Basketball Association (NBB) it does not work that way.
Lely went on with a very young but talented team, which may be able to get some unexpected wins. In the preseason, however, the Lions posted a 61-42 rout of Lely, and that was before the arrival of Kati Harty, Molly McDowell and Marie Hoogsstraten, ProBuild's most productive trio in the first regular games of the season.
Wednesday Lely took a 44-66 loss to AutoCAD Amazone.
Game starts at 7.30 PM CET.
Lions Outlast Grasshoppers

Marie Hoogstraten nailed four 3-pointers and scored 21 points as the ProBuild Lions posted a 61-72 victory over STOL Grashoppers in Katwijk.
Karen Heinen had double-double, with 10 points and 14 rebounds, while Molly McDowell contributed 16 points, 5 assists and 5 steals. Kati Harty chipped in with 11 points and 5 assists.
ProBuild performed far from flawlesly. The young and somewhat undersized Grasshoppers stayed close for most of the game and sometimes even took the lead. It was not before the 4th period that the Lions were able to create a margin large enough to pull the game away.
Coach Laki Lakner said he thought the Lions dropped a few levels after Saturday's game in Den Helder. "Saturday I was proud of my team, but actually now I am a little bit embarrassed. Our budget is probably twice as large as Grasshoppers'. There's no way they can match our experience, bench-dept and quality. We should have won by 30 points here. There's still a lot of inconsistency in our game. We have to use our heads a little more."
After the first period ProBuild led 8-15, but Grasshoppers scored 9 straight points in the first minutes of the second quarter to take a 17-15 lead.
After that ProBuild and STOL exchanged leads for a while, with the Lions being on top at the break, 32-36.
In the third period Marie Hoogstraten scored one of her four 3-pointers to spark a 0-9 run, putting the Lions up by 10 points, 37-47. By the end of the quarter Grasshoppers had cut the deficit to 6 points again, 46-52.
Hoogstraten, Molly McDowell and Kati Harty all hit a 3-pointer to help the Lions build a 52-69 cushion in the 6th minute of the fourth period, which was enough to take the game.
Katwijk is a Dutch fishing town on the coast of the North Sea. In the weekends the trawlers return and their crews go watch the ladies basketball team of Grasshoppers, the local pride.
Midweek games can be little quiet though, but hopefully the visit of the brand new winner of the Supercup will be able to attract some land-based viewers.
The Grasshoppers rarely make the play-offs, but there are signs this year they gained strength with the signing of coach Bo Melis and guard Missy Mitidiero from DePaul University. The 5.4 Mitidiero averaged 6.7 points in her senior year in the Big East. Last season she started her professional career in Iceland, where she scored an average of 20 points per game.
The Lions had a light recovering practice last night and after wards watched the video of Sunday's game, entertained and enlightened by the comments of Coach Laki Lakner, who had not failed to notice a few hundreds of mistakes. Tuesday the ladies are off.
The game in Katwijk on Wednesday starts at 8.30 PM CET.
Lions win SuperCup

As was everybody's expectation after last night, today ProBuild Lions won the first Dutch Supercup.
The foundation was laid last night, when the Lions routed HLB Accountants 54-90 in Den Helder. Today the Dutch champions had to erase a 34 points deficit in Landsmeer, which proved to be an impossible task. The Lions lost by 10 points, 59-69, and kept a comfortable 24-point margin.
Kati Harty led the Lions in scoring with 19 points, Molly McDowell had 13 points and 6 assists and Marie Hoogstraten chipped in with 10 points.
The Lions did not match the level of intensity they reached last night. HLB on the other hand was more aggressive and had a more than average shooting night.
Coach Laki Lakner said he more or less expected that. "We sure had liked to have a second victory before our own fans, and we did our best, but whatever I said or did, on a subconscious level the team was like: 'hey, we just have to keep them within a 34 points margin'. We simply could not match yesterday's aggressiveness and concentration level. The lesson is that we still have a long way to go. Keeping up the intensity level over a longer period of time is the secret of being successful in the play-offs."
"But I can live with it at this stage of the season. Right after the game I told the girls to forget the loss and enjoy the ceremony. Measured over two games we did a great job."
After the first period HLB led 19-21. In the 6th minute of the second quarter the game was tied 26-26, but next HLB placed a 2-12 run to take a 28-38 lead at intermission.
It turned out to be decisive. After the third period the margin had not changed much, 41-53. In the fourth quarter Kati Harty and Marijn Neyndorff both hit a 3-pointer to narrow the gap to 51-55 and in the 7th minute Harty made it 59-62. However, next HLB scored 4 points from the foul line and Leonie Kooij drained a buzzer beating trey to secure the win for HLB Accountants.
Kati Harty scored 35 points to lead the ProBuild to a 54-90 rout of HLB Accountants in the first game of the Supercup double header.
The Lions pushed around HLB at their own court, setting up the 14-times Dutch Champions for a rare 30+ points defeat at home.
HLB now is facing the challenge to erase a 34 points deficit during the second game in Landsmeer tomorrow.
The Lions played with passion and energy HLB was unable to muster. Coach Laki Lakner credited his team with the victory. "We followed our game plan, we shared the ball effectively and we did a solid job on the the defensive end. We can finish the job tomorrow. Tonight, I am very proud of my team."
Lakner said he thought Kati Harty had a great game. "Kati is picking up our defensive style quickly, she did a good job guarding her opponents. And offensively nobody could stop her when she drove the lane. She's so quick."
The only way to stop Harty was to foul her. But that proved to be not a very effective strategy, as she made 14 out of 16 free throws.
ProBuild shot 43.7% from the floor and 40.6% from behind the 3-point line.
Jasmijn Overbeeke, Marie Hoogstraten and Marijn Neyndorff each scored 12 points and Molly McDowell contributed 11.
HLB led 10-5 after five minutes in the game, but Molly McDowel hit a 3-pointer and Marie Hoogstraten tied the game 10-10. Center Marloes Roetgerink put HLB up 12-10, but Jasmijn Overbeeke and Kati Harty both made a basket to help ProBuild take the lead for good.
After the first period ProBuild led 14-21. Kati Harty drained a trey at the start of the second period and made it 14-27 a few moments later. Jasmijn Overbeeke burried a 3-pointer to put the Lions up 16-34. At halftime ProBuild led 2-46.
Marie Hoogstraten started the second half by hitting a 3-pointer and Kati Harty nailed two treys to make it 30-59. With HLB Dutch star player Leonie Kooij fouled out early trying to stop Harty, ProBuild was able to build a 30-point lead at the start of the 4th period: 41-71. Marijn Neydorff hit her second, third and fourth shot from behind the arc during a short stretch in the last quarter.
This weekend a difficult task lies ahead for the Lions: to win the first edition of the Dutch Supercup. While in other sports, like soccer, the Supercup has become something of a tradition, in Dutch basketball the phenomenon was introduced not earlier this season.
The Supercup is a battle between last year's national champions, HLB Accountants Den Helder and last years Dutch Cup Winnner ProBuild Lions.
The Cup will be presented to the winner of a doubleheader, with the first game in Den Helder on Saturday and the second in Landsmeer on Sunday.
Coach Laki Lakner and his team spent the week preparing for the weekend.
The away-game on Saturday starts at 6:30 PM CET and the game on Sunday in Landsmeer starts at 4 PM CET.

Kati Harty had an impressive debute in Landsmeer, posting 24 points along with 6 steals and 4 assists, as the ProBuild Lions routed AutoCAD Amazone 88-60.
Molly McDowell showed off her all round game with 13 points, 8 steals and 7 assists. Marie Hoogstraten and Marijn Neyndorff came off the bench to combine for 28 points, with Hoogstraten scoring 16 and Neyndorff 12, draining four 3-pointers.
"It is kind of reassuring to have such a deep bench", coach Laki Lakner said. "It gives us a lot of opportunities. "
His colleague Jan Poels was in a different position on the other bench. Three of his starters, Marloes Renskers, Francis Donders and Heather Zurich were in street clothes sitting next to him, suffering from various injuries.
Considering the woeful state AutoCAD was in, to call the game between ProBuild and Amazone a very meaningful measure of strength would be far from realistic, as coach Laki Lakner was well aware off. "This win does not mean a lot in that sense", he said. "Our game was far from perfect. We made too many mistakes on the defensive end, allowing a lot of easy baskets. Offensively we missed some uncontested lay-ups. We still have a lot of work to do at practice."
The Lions trailed 20-22 after the first period, but outscored Amazone 28-11 in the second, hitting six 3-pointers. At halftime ProBuild led by 48-33.
Kati Harty made an instant mark by nailing two 3-pointers in the first 3 minutes of the game, fueling a 10-2 opening burst. But next Amazone's new center Amber Jackson went to work, scoring 10 of her 16 points in the first period to put AutoCAD up 20-22 after the quarter.
Harty sparked the Lions' offense by draining another trey at the start of the second period, followed by 3-pointers from Ilana Vergunst and Molly McDowell. Marijn Neyndorff came in, hitting three consecutive rainbows from behind the arc, helping to build a 48-33 cushion entering the break.
In the third period the Lions extended their lead to 63-45, finishing the job in the first four minutes of the last quarter, when Marie Hoogstraten scored 9 straight points to fuel a 13-0 surge, topped off by a lay-up from Belinda Bos, 74-45.
The rest of the game was a formality. The most notable moment was rookie Marloes Soffner making her debut at the highest level.
Yes, we are! At least, such is the statement Molly McDowell, Jasmijn Overbeeke and Kati Harty are making in the video-announcement for Saturday's game. And they do so quite convincingly.
Saturday ProBuild Lions host AutoCAD Amazone for the first game of the season.
The new set-up of the season probably requires some explanation. In fact, there are two seasons. First, in October and November, the league is divided into two conferences of five teams, who will meet each other twice, playing a total of 8 games. The first and second seeded teams in both conferences will meet in the Final Four tournament on December 18th and 19th.
Meanwhile, on December 3rd, the regular competition starts, in which 18 games are scheduled for each team. There are 8 play-off spots to earn. The play-offs, starting in April, will be finished in three rounds (1: best-of-three; 2: best-of-five; 3: best-of-five).
Also, during the season the Dutch Cup Tournament will be played in four rounds, with the Finals being held in March.
Is everybody still following? Yes, it's complicated, but the upside is: there are three chances to win a price. On top of that for National Champions HLB Accountants and Dutch Cup Winner ProBuild Lions there's a fourth possibility, as they will battle each other for the SuperCup on October 10th and 11th.
Back to next Saturday. AutoCAD Amazone went through a rebuilding process this summer, as two of their key players (Sharon Bos and Petra Rutgers) retired. On the other hand Amazone's management did a good job compensating, signing Francis Donders, the starting point guard of the Dutch national team. She will team up with veteran Marloes Renskers in what probably is going to be a formidable back-court.
On the foreign market Amazone signed American forward Heather Zurich (Rutgers; 5.5 ppg; 2.8 rpg) and center Amber Jackson (North Texas; 16.8 ppg; 9.5 rpg).
In all likelihood these four players will be in the starting line-up with forward Maaike van den Bovenkamp most of the times.
However, Donders (ankle), Renskers (knee), Zurich (broken nose) and Jackson (ankle) all suffer from injuries, and it is doubtful if they all will be recovered on Saturday.
Meanwhile, except for Anouk Biesters' knee injury, the Lions are healthy. Coach Laki Lakner will have 12 players on the bench.
In the weekend of October 10th and 11th ProBuild Lions will Battle HLB Accountants Den Helder for the NBB Super Cup. HLB won the championship last season and ProBuild Lions is the winner of the Dutch Cup Tournament. In a double header HLB and ProBuild will decided who's is the strongest team at the moment.
The first game is scheduled in Den Helder on Saturday the 10th. The next day ProBuild hosts HLB is Landsmeer.
Still a lot of work ahead for Coach Lakner and his team
The ProBuild Lions had a busy schedule this weekend. Friday night they made a trip to Germany for a pre-season game vs New Basket Oberhausen. For NBO the game marked the end of the preseason, for the Lions it was the start. And it showed: the Lions were pushed around by the German team and got routed by 30 points, 89-59.
Karti Harty had a good debut, scoring 16 points, of which 14 in the second half. Marie Hoogstraten had 13 and Molly McDowell chipped in with 10 points.
Back in the Netherlands the Lions split a pair of practice games with Wereldtickets Leiderdorp, beating Wereldtickets 72-55 at home, but losing 88-72 to Leiderdorp on Sunday night in Leiden.
In Landsmeer Kati Harty and Molly McDowell both scored 15 points. Marie Hoogstraten contributed 14.
Coach Laki Lakner said the weekend was instructive, but also a little frustrating. "I don't mind losing to the German team, but the loss to Leiderdorp worries me. I realize it was the third game in three days and the team experienced an amount of fatigue, but still we should not take a loss there. We still have a lot of work to do, that much became clear."
Kati Harty and Molly McDowell arrived savely on Schiphol Airport and Marie Hoogstraten is back from her tour with the national team. Coach Laki Lakner and his team have two weeks now to prepare for the season.
A busy weekend lies ahead for the Lions. Friday night they travel to Germany for a pre-season game at New Basket Oberhausen. Kati Harty is expected to make her European debut, while Molly McDowell returns to the city where she played in the 2004-2005 season and made quite an impression.
Saturday ProBuild returns to Landsmeer to host Wereldtickets Leiderdorp for a practice game. The game starts at 7 pm CET.
Sunday the Lions travel to Leiderdorp to return the visit. This game starts at 4 PM CET.
Although far from being complete yet, the ProBuild Lions outscored Lely Amsterdam 61-42 in their first serious practice game of the season.
Molly McDowell and Kati Harty are expected to arrive next Tuesday, Marie Hoogstraten is taking a well-deserved rest after being with the Dutch national team during most of the summer, while Anouk Biesters, Karen Heinen en Marloes Soffner are sidelined with injuries.
On the other hand there was a guest-player in the Lions' line-up: former Dutch international Jinga Gosschalk, who is practicing with the Lions before joining her new team in Israel.
In absence of a genuine point guard Belinda Bos and Ilana Vergunst took turns at the point guard position. The Lions had a slow start, leading 35-28 at halftime, but never lost control of the game. In the last quarter they used a 10-4 run to widen the gap to 19 points.
The team has resumed practicing some weeks ago now after the summer break. Is everything going according to plan?
I would say so, yes. We're practicing five times a week now, but not all the players have arrived yet. Marie Hoogstraten is still with the national team. Anouk Biesters, who also is a national team player, has had knee surgery this summer and will be out until at least January. And our two foreign players, Molly McDowell and Kati Harty, will not arrive until September 14th. So we combine with the second unit at practice. Most of the players kept themselves in good shape during the summer, so that's positive.
Are you happy with the roster?
Yes, I am pretty happy with the roster. The important thing is we didn't make too many changes, so we can keep on building on what we achieved last year. The atmosphere in the team is great. We made some additions to our staff, with assistant coaches Johan Kaal and Jesse Korf. Rene Wormhoudt is still our trainer and condition coach and I am very happy with his contribution. He's one of the best condition coaches in the Netherlands. He will be assisted by Frank van Deursen, who does all the condition-monitoring, using the latest equipment and software. And Marcus Torenstra will keep working with the ladies in the fitness room, building up their strength.
How about the players?
I believe we have a great team. With Molly McDowell we have an experienced and smart point guard. She's the team's leader, our Captain. With new foreign players you always have to wait and see, but I'm convinced Kati Harty will make a great addition to the team, being able to play at shooting guard as well as at the point guard position. With her and Molly we have a back court as good as any team's. Ilana Vergunst and Belinda Bos are veteran guards and I expect them to play smart and solid defense and offensively to be a threat from long distance as well as by driving to the basket. Marie Hoogstraten is entering her second season with us and I think she will do an even better job than last season. She can play at both forward positions. Karen Heinen is the newcomer, she will play at the 4-position. She plays hard on both ends, doing a lot of the little things which can help a team win games. Jasmijn Overbeeke was hampered by a foot injury last season, but she had surgery this summer and she's in great shape now. I expect a lot of her; I think she's one of the top power forwards in the nation. Nadine Boesaart plays at center. She's a veteran who masters all the post moves and also has range, but she has to become more productive. At center we also have Mara Hessling, who's coming off her rookie year. She has a great mentality, she's a good natural rebounder, but when it comes to her basic skills there's still room for improvement. We will work with her on that. Marloes Soffner and Eline Vink are our rookies. I expect them to work hard and learn as much as possible. And we also have Marijn Nijendorff, who will play for the second unit, as she has a busy job and won't be able to attend practice always. But she's one of the best 3-point shooters in the nation. In case of injuries and when we have important games I will place her on the roster of the first unit.
Any tactical changes you plan to make?
No, we stick with the same, simple philosophy. Our game is based on our defense. We always play hard, outwork our opponents and we won't allow easy scores and offensive rebounds. Offensively we take it from there. Our offensive plays are designed to utilize every individual player's strong points. I think you might see us play some more full court press defense than last season.
What do you expect of the season?
As always I expect us to take the championship. If we don't, I will be extremely disappointed, like I was last season. I always set our goals high; you will never hear me say we settle for a second place. Our fans expect a lot from us, we can't disappoint them. We are one of the top four teams for years now. I expect to be the competition to be interesting. Most teams gained strength; some signed some really good American players. So I very much look forward to the month of October.
Saturday the ProBuild Lions are scheduled to play a pre-season game vs Lely Amsterdam in the city of Heerenveen.
The Lions are not at full strength yet. Molly McDowell and Kati Harty are expected to arrive next week, while Marie Hoogstraten just finished a tour with the Dutch national team with a game vs Sweden, resulting in a promotion of the Dutch to the European A-league.
Today ProBuild Lions announced the signing of 5-6 American guard Kati Harty. With the landing of Harty, coach Laki Lakner fills the only remaining open spot in the Lions' roster.
Last four seasons Kati Harty spent with the University of Wisconsin - Green Bay. The Green Bay Phoenix dominated the Horizon League during the last decade, winning 10-out-of-11 League Championships, each time earning a berth into the 64-team NCAA Women's Basketball Championship. In the NCAA tournament of 2009, however, the Phoenix were eliminated in the first round by LSU, spoiling a team-high 17 point-effort from their starting point guard Kati Harty.
In her last season with Green Bay, Harty averaged 9.6 ppg, along with 4.3 assists and 2.4 steals.
Coach Lakner said Molly McDowell will remain the Lions' starting point guard and that he plans to start Kati Harty at shooting guard. During some stretches in the game she will relieve McDowell at the point.
Harty is a highly accurate shooter from long distance, hitting 43% of her 3-point-attempts last season. "I don't have a problem playing at the 2-spot," she said. "Actually I played shooting guard in my first two years at Green Bay. I am very anxious to go overseas and play professional basketball in Europe."
Coach Laki Lakner said he was excited to add Harty to his team. "I had a long talk with her over the phone and she made a good impression. She's the kind of competitor I like to have on my team. She can help us in a number of ways, like with her outside shooting and her being able to do some point guard-duty also."
Kati Harty and Molly McDowell are expected to arrive in the Netherlands around mid-September.
