Just before taking off for Amsterdam Theresa LeCuyer participated in a pick-up game with a college team in Minnesota and partially tore her Achilles tendon. She is sidelined for at least two months. After hearing the news, the ProBuild Lions management had to decide to look for another American front court player. "I can't believe this is happening to me", LeCuyer said. "But I understand they want to find an other American. It is taking at least until Christmas before I will be able to play again."

Lions Take Revenge on Amazone in Practice Game

Two weeks ago the Lions lost from AutoCAD Amazone at their home court, but tonight they took revenge in Utrecht, 51-65. Being a more complete team now, with national team players Tanya Bröring and Anouk Biesters returned to the roster and American guard Amy Taylor having arrived on Monday, the Lions had no trouble beating the Utrecht team. Amy Taylor had an impressive debut, with 31 points, hitting 6-out-of-6 shots from behind the arch. Coach Laki Lakner said he liked what he saw from Taylor. "Scoring 31 points is one thing, but Amy is not a selfish player and looks for the pass first. She's a good ball handler and she understands the game. And she's a nice person too." Lakner was not quite satisfied with the way his team played, but said that was understandable. "We're just together for a couple of days. We have to get used to each other and we have to get much more aggressive. But I see great potential. In two or three weeks we will be able to do much more. Just wait and see."
Jasmijn Overbeeke had 13 points for the Lions. With Amazone Judy Wright scored 25 points.

The Lions travelled to Katwijk Thursday and returned with another win over Grasshoppers, 55-58. With Amy Taylor and Theresa LeCuyer scheduled to arrive next week and Tanya Bröring and Anouk Biesters playing in Norway with the national team, ProBuild was shorthanded and once again had to fall back on it's second unit. Still the Lions again proved to be too strong for the team from Katwijk, where Canadian Julie Lamparski made her debut. The former player from the University of Ontario scored 14 points for Grasshoppers. The Lions led 25-33 at halftime. Junior Rianne Philippo led ProBuild with 13 points, Jasmijn Overbeeke had 11 and Karina Worku scored 9 points.

The ProBuild Lions still were shorthanded, but had no trouble beating Grasshoppers in a practice game at their home court in Landsmeer. The Lions's starting point guard Tanya Bröring and forward Anouk Biesters were in Ireland for a game with the Dutch national team and the team's captain Gerda Heinen was sidelined with a sprained ankle. So again ProBuild's juniors got a chance to show their talent. And that's what they did, especially in the first two periods, when they outscored Grasshoppers 29-8.
But keeping up the intensity for the whole game proved to be difficult and in the third quarter the Grasshoppers managed to cut the deficit to 38-29. But the Lions recovered in the fourth period and cruised to an easy victory.
Rianne Philippo led the Lions with 13 points, Jasmijn Overbeeke and Karina Worku both had 11.

The ProBuild Lions lost their first practice game from Amazone Leidsche Rijn, 49-71. At halftime the Lions trailed by just one point, 29-30, but could not keep up with the visiting team in the second half. Amazone came to Landsmeer with a complete roster, including Americans Judy Wright (17 points) and Rachel Ziemann (16 points). ProBuild's American players Theresa LeCuyer and Amy Taylor are to arrive yet.
The Lions were also without Tanya Bröring and Anouk Biesters, who had obligations with the national team tonight. Gerda Heinen and Jasmijn Overbeeke both played just the first half, because of injuries. So, all and all, coach Laki Lakner was not surprised by the loss. "I though it was nice that we could keep up with them the first half, without four of our best players and two others injured. In the second half we gave our junior players lots of playing time, which was a good learning experience for them."

Heini Suokari Completes Lions' Roster
Author: Henk Wals
Date: August 15, 2006
Dutch
Coach Laki Lakner announced the completion of his roster for the 2006-2007 season. The last addition to his team was Heini Suokari from Finland. The 6-0 forward played for Turun Riento in Finland as well as the Finnish junior national team before moving to the United States to play for Dowling College in the NCAA II. Founding out that her boyfriend was going to study in Amsterdam she decided to follow him and contacted coach Lakner.
At the guard spots the Lions have Tanya Bröring, Karina Worku, Amy Taylor, Belinda Bos en Rianne Philippo. Gerda Heinen en Anouk Biesters will fill the small forwards spots, and Theresa LeCuyer, Jasmijn Overbeeke, Nadine Boesaart and Heini Suokari will play at 4 and 5.
Coach Lakner said he thinks his team is stronger than last year. "We have two or three good players at every position", he said. "That enables us to rotate without loosing quality on the floor. We have all kinds of different options. I very much look forward to the season."

Theresa LeCuyer Returns to the Netherlands
Author: Henk Wals
Date: August 11, 2006
Dutch
The ProBuild Lions management announced the signing of forward Theresa LeCuyer. The 6-1 American was the leading scorer in the Dutch league in the 2004-2005 season, when she played for Leiderdorp and averaged 23.7 points and 11.8 rebounds per game. Last season LeCuyer played in Luxembourg, where she scored 26 ppg.
Before coming to Europe LeCuyer played for the University of Minnesota in the Big Ten Conference of the NCAA I for two seasons, before she transferred to the University of North Dakota in the NCAA II. With Minnesota, as a sophomore she was the second scorer on the team, with more than 8 points per game. After moving to North Dakota, in 2001 she was named the North Central Conference women's basketball most valuable player and NCAA II player of the year. With the Fighting Sioux she averaged 17.2 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.
Coach Laki Lakner said he is sure LeCuyer will make a great addition to the ProBuild Lions team. "I remember her pouring in 36 points against Lely Amsterdam, the team I coached in 2004-2005. She was unstoppable. She's a versatile power forward: she can play the post, but also drive and shoot the jumper, even the trey. It's an advantage to have an experienced American player on the roster, someone who knows the country and the league and does not have to adjust."
Theresa LeCuyer said she was excited about returning to the Netherlands and play for one of the top-3 teams. "I loved it, the two seasons I played here and I even learned to speak some Dutch. So I look very much forward to the new season."

ProBuild signs Amy Taylor

Dutch
The ProBuild Lions management announced today that the club has signed American Amy Taylor, a 5-8 guard from the Seattle Pacific University (NCAA II). With the Falcons Taylor averaged 12.4 points and 3.9 assists per game. In 2005 Amy Taylor received an NCAA Division II All American Honorable Mention and was elected as GNAC Player of the Year. Before enrolling in SPU in 2003 Taylor spent her first two college years with the University of Oregon in the PAC-10 of the NCAA I. In 2005 Amy Taylor signed a training camp contract with the Seattle Storm of the WNBA, but did not make the team. Coach Laki Lakner said he picked Amy Taylor after looking at loads of DVDs this summer. "Primarily I was looking for a shooter, but Amy also runs the team at point guard. She's a versatile, hard working player, with leadership qualities. I liked very much what I saw. Fine skills, good decision-making. She can create her own 3-point shot from the dribble and shoots against a high-percentage. I am sure she will do a good job for us."

The Lions fought hard until the last second of the game, but fell to Binnenland 72-66. Amanda Davidson bounced back from her disappointing performance on Saturday, scoring 29 points on 11-out-of-18 shooting from the floor and draining five 3-pointers. Tanya Bröring scored 16 points and Kati Burrows had 12 and 9 rebounds. Davidson finished the season leading the Lions in scoring, averaging 17.5 points per game against 47,7% shooting. Burrows averaged 16 points and Bröring 15.5.
The shorthanded Lions, with only eight players on the bench due to injuries, came up short in the last period, the game being tied at the end of the third quarter. Amanda Davidson and Tanya Bröring both had to play for 40 minutes.
With less than one minute on the clock and the Lions trailing 72-60, Amanda Davidson and Tanya Bröring both scored a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 72-66. But with 11 seconds on the clock, there was not much more that could be done.
Coach Laki Lakner was disappointed about losing the series, but said he could live with tonight's loss. "At least we went down fighting tonight and I'm proud of that. We really showed heart tonight. I was disappointed about Amanda's performance on Saturday, but tonight she gave all she had and that was a lot. We did not loose the series here, but on our own home court." Lakner said he was disappointed about not reaching the finals.
"We won two prices this season, which was great, but at the end of the day the championship is the thing that really counts. But we fell a bit out of luck towards the end of the season, with Susan Peters leaving and Sharon Bos and Belinda Bos getting injured. Sharon did not reach her old level of intensity again and Belinda could have given us the instant offence from the bench we needed so much this series."

Despite Kati Burrows's 29-point-effort, the Lions dropped another home-game to Renes/Binnenland, who leads the series by 2-1 now. Binnenland built too big a lead for the Lions to do anything down the stretch this time. Kati Burrow had a double-double, pulling down 12 rebounds, Tanya Bröring scored 22 points and Gerda Heinen contributed 17. Amanda Davidson came into early foul trouble and finished the game with a season-low three points.
The Lions trailed by 20 points in the second period, but managed to cut the deficit to 73-76 by a 3-pointer from Tanya Bröring with 43 seconds on the clock. After a time-out by Binnenland's coach Gertjan van der Linden, Irene Sloof hit a 3-pointer for her team, ending the Lions' hopes to win the game.
Coach Lakner said he thought that Davidson being in foul trouble was crucial for the game. "Amanda is a great player, who has done a wonderful job for us this season, but this time she did not help us much by making two unnecessary pushing fouls in the first period, so I had to bench her in the second, and then being more or less invisible in the second half."
Lakner said he credited his team for clawing back in the second half, but that twenty points were too big a deficit to overcome against an experienced team like Binnenland.
At halftime the Lions trailed by 27-43.
Monday ProBuild has to win the fourth game in Barendrecht to avoid elimination and bring the series back to Landsmeer.

The Lions dug themselves an early hole, but managed to climb out of it. They erased a 13-point deficit and pushed around Binnenland in the last period to roll to a 64-75 victory to even the series 1-1. Amanda Davidson scored 21 points and Tanya Bröring had 19. Kati Burrows contributed 15 points and Gerda Heinen chipped in with 11. Both pulled down 7 rebounds.
Monday's game, when the Lions led by as much as 14 points in the first quarter, but ultimately suffered a defeat, was mirrored in this game. The Lions started 0-out-of 11 from the floor and were 2-out-of-15 in the first period, when they trailed by 11 points.
In the second period ProBuild clawed within 31-23 on a 3-pointer by Tanya Bröring and cut the deficit to six points at intermission, 35-29.
Two consecutive 3-pointers by Amanda Davidson in the third quarter gave the Lions a 36-37 lead. ProBuild and Renes changed leads until the end of the 3th period, when Laura Kooij made a basket for Binnenland to even the score, 47-47.
In the 3rd minute of the fourth period Gerda Heinen drained a trey to give the Lions a seven-point lead, 49-56, and a few minutes later she made a basket to push the advantage to 53-65. Amanda Davidson made seven of eight free-throws in the last three minutes to seal the victory.
Coach Laki Lakner, who worked with his team on Tuesday night to analyze Monday's game and make some changes in the plays, said he was glad it worked out. "We changed the rotation a bit and created some more options in the paint to get the ball in Kati's hands. Obviously, that worked. Defensively we managed to make less fouls. They did not get to the line as much as Monday."

In the last period Binnenland cruised to a 11-point lead with three minutes on the clock, 54-65, but Kati Burrows and Tanya Bröring both scored for the Lions and Bröring hit a bonus, 59-65. Linda Appers drilled a jumper on the other side, 59-67 and coach Laki Lakner asked for a time-out with 1.37 minutes to go. Next Amanda Davidson hit a trey, 62-67, but on the following possession Sharon Bos missed an open jumper with 28 seconds on the clock. Binnenland rebounded and took a time-out. In the remaining time the Lions did not get another possession.
Coach Laki Lakner was disappointed, but credited Binnenland for their victory. "We played a solid first quarter, but started to let the game slip away in the second, when we made too many fouls and granted them easy points from the line. In the third we completely lost control over the game. We could not control [Tree] Jackson and she killed us in the paint. We let them get back into the game, and they got it. We're one down and that's a big disappointment, but I still believe we can win the series."
